Bill, Mong, others--can you please check out this tile job?
Comments (11)You have no idea how close I came in my previous post to asking if there was a heat mat underneath. I advise you to talk to your installer before he does the repair and ask what happens if the heat matt is destroyed during the repair. Making repairs over a heat mat makes things considerably more delicate. It depends on the type of mat and where/how it was installed, and how the installer intends to make the repair. I have a squawk box that I made from parts at Radio Shack. It's essentially a continuity tester. I clip it to the leads of the heat mat when I'm working. If at any time one of the wires is broken, the continuity of the circuit is interrupted and a buzzer sounds. He definitely needs something like that, and it needs to be used during the repair. Comments (24)I googled something else and found this thread. Lippageis poor craftsmanship. I was looking for a way to explain to my client why im taking so long. They keep complaining im slow at tiling I keep telling them im very detailed and every stone must fit perfect. Polishing lippage is wrong probably why it broke. A planatary floor sander should be used first to smooth out lippage. a full section should be done, like a room and stop on a grout line/seem. Then honing using honing powder to the desired finish this for natural stone. Polishing will not remove lippage. From WORK From WORK...See MoreBad tile job?? Please give input/advice asap!
Comments (6)A lot of your photos show mistakes made by a beginner in tile *layout*. This doesn't necessarily mean your person is a beginner at laying or grouting tile. At any rate, I would post these photos over at the John Bridges Tile Forum - I'm sure they'd be glad to provide professional, constructive criticism! Comments (17)I would use white caulk in the corners, not gray. This is because the tile layout should look like the tiles bend around the corners. i.e., half a tile on either side of the corner, or 1/4 on one side and 3/4 on the other side. So a contrasting caulk would cut the tile visually and eliminate the illusion of the bending tile. Also, always caulk, not grout, when you have changes of plane. Finally, as others mentioned, you should not have slivers of tile on the ends or corners. You fix this by shifting the tiles. So on the RH side (I assume this is your first photo), the pattern should be shifted 1/2" to the left, so that in the corner you have full tiles or half tiles, every other row. Then on the left corner the tiles will all be pushed down 1/2" so that the wrapped around portion that's now about 1" becomes 1 1/2" wide....See Morepeggross1
