Is there a reason why you can't do both now? Repaint and put in new carpet? The paint color is going to throw off the true color of any neutral carpet that you might be thinking of installing.

I agree that a medium toned beige or grey will be good for your room. No blue.

If you go with beige, beware of pinkish beige, which will limit your other color choices later.

As somebody who lived with a neutral carpet for years-

highly depends on the traffic in your house, Unless complete no shoe policy-you'll have traffic lines (not mentioning spills etc..say no spills, everything's perfect). Even with no shoe policy-very high chance of carpet looking different where it has been exposed to sun vs places it was not.

I never tried a real wool carpet(which costs like hardwood) -but whatever we tried was a normal mid quality carpet, and within 3 years looked like hell, in upstairs area, not in the living

(other carpets also looked like hell, but since it was not us who installed them, I can just say they looked like hell)

on the other hand I saw a white-white!!-carpet that stayed white after 20 years the homeowners put it in. So miracles do happen, but I bet these people were adamant about keeping their carpet looking like fresh snow. No shoes, and all. I don't tell my guests to take their shoes off, so to me, would be out of question. Everyone's different.

I still spent..oh my? close to 14 years altogether, living with neutral carpets, so it's not like it's SO important. But if you know yourself being a kind of a person that would hate the carpet looking dirty soon-go with a darker color.

If your furniture stays-pick a warmer shade of whatever color you prefer. The blue one seems to lilac based to me thus too cold. The blue you have know, while still being blue, has a lot of green it it and reads warmer.

And if you don't like the color of your walls enough-I'd wait until I figure out the color of the walls too. Maybe. Unless the current carpet is really worn, and is driving you cray. I somehow like it, but then I know it from the picture only, while you're the one living there.

But of course next to the bolder color like gold, light color will seem washed out. Especially as you've used to deeper shade now.

Not neccessarily a bad thing-you won't have a sample, you'll have the whole area covered in that carpet..maybe you want it to be washed out.

That's one of the reasons I'd wait until I figure out: what do I want my walls to be? Other things in the room-will they stay warm colored? How new carpet will look next to the brick? (btw love this brick area with a stove..very cozy)

I always think that floors should be darker than walls. Beige looks washed out because it not only is it unable to compete with that rich saturated color, but it's also not dark enough. Maybe look at some deeper earth tones? Give it a kind of forest floor natural easy to live with look.

I agree, the floor should be much darker. If you can't go for wood at this time, take a look at these inspiration pics which show a variety of treatments from white to black to something else including more gold!

(call me crazy-I still like what you have now, more. But then I'm not from here, and I don't have associations many people here have, because they lived with it for a long time, got bored, etc

and I also like the contrast with your gold. Deeper shade supports gold better. Even though you can always play with it all of course-accessories, a rug, you name it. You repeat a color, add darker touches-it balances itself. It can be neutral-you can make it work. You just need to make sure it's the right shade of a color.

If gold goes-then blue(or rather emerald green) might become out of place. Or might not)

Another reason to picture the whole room and its mood in your mind first, then narrow down from there

What about brown? Not a dark brown, but more cocoa?

Or even a dark brown like below. It is better to go with something that enhances the room the way it is now IMO rather than going with something in-between for a future color on the walls that may not happen for several years.

You could always choose a fabric you love with the colors - gold and brown for example, and use that as inspiration for your carpeting color. An insp pic is below, but you would choose your own style to see what works on the small scale before committing to something as large as an entire room color. For example see below. I think it's easier to pull colors from fabric that work that way. JMO

Two options that would look great... soft off-white cream (should not have a pink or green cast) or for drama a very deep midnight blue. With your current furnishings and potential paint change I would stick to off-white or a pale silver gray. Stay away from texture and look more for plush or smoother look.

The easiest fix is an Oriental carpet that has medium tones of red, blue, turquoise, beige, green etc. unless of course you're looking for a wall-to-wall carpet. In that case I think a dark gray might look good.

Have you taken a peek to see what's under your current carpeting?

I was thinking to just pull it up, remove the tack strips and give it a good clean and get a large area rug....so much easier, less expensive and temporary (if you like). I mean, the carpet has to come up anyway, right? May as well diy and save a couple bucks....

I have navy and gold wallpaper but not sure what colour of stair carpet to get. i got a silverish grey that didnt look great.
