Hard to say without seeing any of it, but I’d think any rug with mainly blues and tans/browns would work. I don’t know your style preferences, here a few general examples of colors I mean:

None. No I didn't look. It will crawl. it is unnecessary. It will look lumpy and heavy. Don't buy one. It's the basement. Save your money for the full replacement to something else.

I disagree strongly with Jan’s absolutes. We’re currently renting a house with a sea of beige wall-to-wall that I can’t change. I love having my area rug in the living room over it. It looks great ... brings in color, feels plush, personalizes and anchors the area. I get compliments on it all the time. Doesn’t crawl, doesn’t look lumpy, doesn’t look heavy, it’s not unnecessary. You just need one with the right weight.

I’m sorry I thought pictures posted. its not a horrible blue, we just can’t replace it now. If I do an area rug, should I use the rug tape or a pad to ensure it doesn’t slip if it doesn’t have an anti slip backing?

No, if you get a heavy enough rug, like the types in my links, you shouldn’t have an issue with any movement at all.

It will CRAWL. It matters not how heavy it is. It's not meant to sit on another carpet. Anti slip....is meant to be that, on a HARD flooring. You're wasting money towards a full replacement. ........whether it crawls, doesn't crawl. Immediate gratification usually disappoints: ) in dollars. But have at it, it is your home and your wallet : )

Personally? I'd rather rip the existing , polish up the floor, and get something large enough to be used with an LVP or engineered floor up the road.

It's not a hideous rug as is. Clean it, and work with blue/beige in pillows or an upholstered cocktail ottoman and art.

Ripping it up and polishing underneath is not an option. It’s a basement and the floor is concrete. And I refuse to paint concrete. So the blue carpeting will stay. I know I can throw an area rug on top. It’s not a high traffic area or used daily. It’s going to be my crafting space. Just looking for aesthetically pleasing.

Ignore the naysayers. An area rug will look wonderful in your space. If you can take a better pic of the area, with everything but the sofa cleared away, some of the rug sites on the internet will let you "try" their rugs in your room.

I agree a pattern rug in complementary colors will add much needed pizzazz to the space. If it was my room I would get an 8x10 or large enough rug to anchor under couch front legs, just in case it wants to walk away on its own as rugs on carpets have been known to do occasionally.

This is the rug in our library, which is on top of carpet. It's not lumpy. It's not "CRAWLING" (let's scream that word one more time, shall we? CRAWL!), and it was exactly the touch I craved for this room. Ideally, we would've had wood flooring in this space, but we don't and we aren't investing in that anytime soon, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with adding a rug to a room over carpet if that's what you want to do. It will more than likely help you to enjoy your space in the here and now.

I have rugs over carpet too, and they don't CRAWL. ;) Heck, I even have small area rugs by the bed and they don't move, unless I move them. Perhaps if you use a floor cloth, it may bunch up a bit, but a rug has more heft.

I don't care for area rugs of any kind. I like an uninterrupted vision on a floor. Just my preference. Plus if you have nice floors why cover them up. I did have 2 in my last house (that is were I found out I don't like them) , but they never creeped, slithered, wormed, lollygaged or crawled anywhere. They did fly though, out the front door when I found out I don't like area rugs. Find a nice pattern and enjoy.

You might find out you like the W/W carpet in the basement if you live in a cold weather climate. The floor is so much warmer.
