Shower curtain vs glass doors
Comments (9)I agree with moccasinlanding that you should prioritize the floor over the shower door. IMO it's fine to use different tiles for the shower floor and the rest of the floor, as long as the tiles coordinate well. However, if they don't, the floors will end up being an eyesore that would be difficult and expensive to re-do. As for the shower door/curtain choice, if money were no object, I'd prefer a glass door any day. Shower curtains are a nuisance and an on-going expense. I use a pair of clear liners around my clawfoot tub. I try to get extra heavy, mildew-resistance ones, but even so, they don't last long -- I'm lucky to get a year out of them. I can wash them in my washer once or twice before they either tear or the grommets rust out. (You'd think that someone would make shower curtains with water-resistant grommets, but no.) Finding decent shower curtain liners at a reasonable price (If I had a regular show/tub combo, I'd use a glass shower screen instead of a curtain or full-width glass doors. They're available in fixed (non-moving), pivoting, and folding styles. They look like they'd be easier to keep clean than shower doors, and you wouldn't feel so boxed in when you take a bath. Comments (1)I suppose that could come down to a matter of taste. I think your rod placement and curtain length are fine - they look like my own in my guest bath. The other two baths in this house are tiled to, and including, the ceilings but the same age guest bath (1955) is not. As for the clear shower door, I'd leave it. Bright, light, fresh, airy. That glass will have to be kept free of spots of course. I'm trying to imagine how much more privacy a guest would want when they've closed the door to the room. A small corner stool on which to place hair care items etc temporarily for those guests who may not be able to bend easily (or safely) might be thoughtful. I travel with a minimum of products and would be happy with less in a shower design than I might plan for my daily use at home....See MoreCan I see your shower with fixed glass only, no door?
Comments (25)To Op- sometimes a cheaply made bypass door will lift off the rollers because of the thin glass the manufacturer used. I have seen doors with 1/8” glass. I never recommended anything less than 3/16, but preferred 1/4” or 3/8. For top of the line, I used 1/2”. Be sure you see and feel theses different thicknesses of glass. Physically, the bypass doors stay in the space because of gravity; they hang on the top track. Therefore, any lifting motion will cause them to come off. One solution is a heavier door. You might look at a 3/8” glass frameless bypass unit. The edges of the glass will be polished, the only metal is attached to your walls so you still have the clean look. In addition, this configuration does use any floor space as a swing/ hinge door does. Again, a good glass company with floor displays will be able to offer you options....See Moredebrak_2008
