I think that I saw a Scarlet Tanager this morning

He was a beautiful red with dark tail and wings and was in company of an olive colored female (I think). It had a jarring cry, or maybe that was the red bellied woodpecker that was in the next tree. I am seeing a lot more birds now than just a month ago. I no longer put out food. My neighbor rescues cats and they stalk my yard anyway. We have a bubbling water feature out front that rarely freezes that is a huge wildlife draw.

I've been seeing a mockingbird colored insect eater with a black cap. They sure enjoyed my yard work and watering the yard today and weren't shy at all about coming close to me to grab some insect.

I'm just north of Fort Worth, Texas. Are we in the range for Scarlet Tanagers?

I don't know if you're in the range for them, but you're making me envious! Won't see any of those birds for awhile. A couple years ago, I was on a ride on our property in my cart (central Indiana) and stopped by some trees. I looked up and this is what I saw! I see one every few years and it's always exciting! I hope you get to see more!

Yes, you are in the migration route. I only saw one in my yard once but it was in an apple tree in full bloom and it was quite a sight.

Tisha, I can't imagine why they haven't found your yard. Have you asked your neighbors if anyone ever has any hummers? It seems if they are around the neighborhood, they'd stumble across your yard at some point, especially since you have feeders out. They do eat insects, and feed the insects to their young as well, so if you happen to live in a neighborhood where a lot of people regularly use pesticides, or where the city or county routinely sprays for mosquitoes, that could be impeding your insect population which might cause the hummers to go elsewhere looking for the insects they need. We have had a whole lot of hummers here in Love County--many more than usual. I'm not seeing as many right now, but that is probably because they are hatching and caring for their young. Once the little ones begin to fly, it gets busy again. I still see them, but just not as often as I was about 3 weeks ago. The times I am most likely to see them are early in the morning, shortly after sunup, and then in the evening, not too long before sunset. I guess they are coming to the feeders for breakfast and dinner, but apparently not for lunch. Sometimes I put up a patio mister for them and they come and either play in the mist or bathe in it. A sprinkler also will attract them. Don't give up. Keep the feeders out and keep your eyes open. I think they'll find you sooner or later. Dawn

I've seen 3 more and this is a first for me. Last week we visited the Fort Worth nature center and saw 2 (the pictures were too fuzzy to share) and yesterday I saw another in my yard (up in an oak tree, not the lawn). I am pretty excited to have this many sightings!
