Design Dilemma Bathrooms hallway

Is it Odd Design to put a Sliding Door on Outside of Bathroom Door?

Our bahroom currently has a pocket door. We need to move the door, so we can add a switch for a bathroom fan (currently bathroom has none) and to move the switch closer to the doors. It's currently next to a closet, not right by entry. So we're are looking to remove the pocket door. DH thinks we should put in a sliding door on the outside of the bathroom. I'm not sold on it as it would be the only one like this in our house and would look a little off (imo) in our hallway as all the other doors are your standard wood swing door. How would you make it feel like it belongs with the rest of the house? My other option is to put in a standard door, but the location of the door will semi-block the closet next to it, unless you have the bathroom door shut. Ideas!?!

Is that the same as a barn door? Is there a way to lock it? I lived in a house with a barn door for the bath. There was no way to lock the door. Our dog loved to push the door open with her nose so that she could join me whenever I tried to go in the bath by myself. Other than that, we liked the door. It was the only barn door in the house, but did not look out of place; it suited the space.

How often do you need to access the closet? If daily, it will be inconvenient for it to be blocked but if once a week or so to put away laundry it won't make that much difference. For me, the only time I'm in my bathroom closet is if I'm getting a towel (door is closed anyway for privacy ) or getting clean bed linens/putting away linens and towels which only happens once a week.

I think your instincts are correct: a barn door is a design statement and it's one that really doesn't need to be made for a hall bathroom. Would putting the switches on the other side be an option? So moving them from the right hand to the left for example (not moving them from inside to outside the bathroom).

Great! I love your floor. I have a hunch you're going to love your bathroom. What's your paint color? It is lovely and soft. I just put in BM Bunny Gray in my project and it reads a very soft soft blue. You put in the Bellwether 60" (standard install size) didn't you:) I have that in my ongoing remodel project too. I think it is very stylish. I like the low side for getting small kids in and out (grandkids someday). How do you like using this tub for your shower? My remodel is in a bath without a shower. But I have another bath that might get a make over in a year and haven't decided if I will just take out the tub and go with a shower only or put a tub/shower in to replace the existing setup. Congratulations on a beautiful job. What are your other bathrooms looking like?

They're also slightly warped, so they rub against each other. This will be a problem when I repaint them. If they're warped and bump into each other, you might put the inside one on the outside track and vice versa (provided they fit that way and the hardware works that way).

Are there ways to ensure security of the door--latch, lock, or something like that? sure - you can use a simple hook and eye, will cost you around 2 dollars at he hardware store. Also, are there small cracks at the edge of the door between the wall trim and the door itself that compromise privacy? Of course, but how large or small depends on your contractor's talent and your pocketbook. To minimize gaps your wall will need to be very , very , very , very , very straight AND plumb. The door you use will have to be free of twist and warp also AND remain that way. Normal bulges in the drywall from tape and mud joints will be very troublesome. A level 4 or 5 finish is what you are after. good luck

Personally, I don’t see any problem with having a walk in closet off of master bath. In fact, I like the idea... super convenient. As long as it is within your area’s building code guidelines, I don’t see why it would be an issue, or why you would feel you need validation for this idea (?). People take entire rooms of their existing houses to convert to custom closets, and most folks don’t view that as being odd. I don’t view it as being odd either, btw; and even if I did view it as being odd, it wouldn’t really be my business - since it’s not my house. As far as ‘’making things easier‘’ for your husband goes, though - I hope these extra modifications do work the way you intend, and that he doesn't just forego the closet - and throw his stuff on the bathroom floor!

lindsey yeah not an option to move to the other side so we have doorway which is not even 2 inches from the right corner. Then on that right wall immediately in the corner is the closet. Yes this would be like an extension of the medicine cabinet, extra towels, etc. to the left of the door is the counter and also where the pocket door is located in the wall itself right now, hence not being able to have the electrical here (at the moment).
