Hard to start in cold weather
Comments (34)"This engine is a 2 year old shortblock" "I took the carb apart and let it soak in SeaFoam overnight" OK, shortblock has nothing to do with a dirty old plugged up carb. You stated this was a gravity feed carb. so it still dirty, it an't gravity feeding enough to start on it own. Soaking over night with sea foam is not enough. You have to use Pressurized solvent that contains, acrtone, xylene, ketone just to name a few, this will enable it to break apart and blast the gum or tarnish through the small passages of the carb. (pressurized carb. cleaner was specific designed to do the job, even comes with a little red nozzle to stick right on the small passages to blow out, USE SAFETY GOGGLES cause if you don't get it lined up it will blow back in you face!, I would also read all the instructions and warnings on the can before I used it!)And you still probably need to use a fine piece of wire to ensure you unblock the fine metered curcuits throughout the intards of the carb. Soaking was an old method which used harsh chemicals that would melt away anything but metal and some time even soft metal as well if you left it in long enough. These chemicals are too dangerous and were outlawed back in the early 80's for use shade tree mechanic's if I remember correctly. If you know how to prime and it don't stay running the carb. is STILL dirty or GUMMED up....See MoreHeat Pump Switched to Emergency Heat in warm weather
Comments (5)It's hard to say if the attic workers caused the problem with the information at hand. Emergency heat is not selected automatically. It is selected by the home owner. It's purpose is to provide auxiliary only heat in an emergency (the failure of the heat pump mechanism). It also prevents the compressor from running if it is still able to do so. It should still shut off when the set temperature is reached. What is the make and model of the heat pump and the thermostat? Are you sure the system was in the emergency heat mode? What was the set temperature before you reset it? How did you rest the thermostat? Was the compressor running when the temp went so high? This information would help with a diagnosis. In the meantime, I would disconnect all power to the entire system at the AC breakers for at least five minutes to reset any electronics in the heat pump itself. If the thermostat has a battery in it, it would also be a good idea to remove the battery at the same time. This will help insure that the thermostat really is fully reset. Comments (9)Thank you so much for the responses so far. It is definitely not the thermostat. Just when the weather turned cold this year we lost power to our old thermostat and called our friend who works in HVAC to come take a look. He tripped the breaker which fixed the issue and that is how we knew to do that this time around. When researching causes my husband decided he wanted to Nest and we got it mostly for aesthetic purposes. So, definitely not the Nest or its set up causing the issue. Bare with me as I am new to all of this but will try my best to describe our system. I thought it was Carrier but was wrong. It is a 1988 Amana all-electric heat and cooling system. It was a tested factory model that the previous owner got from her father who worked at the plant and it was installed in September 2001. The breaker is in the crawl space and we have a 1700 square foot two story home. Are there any other details that might be helpful? My husband has a good friend who has worked in HVAC repair for several years. He is a friend but still not cheap! I think we may just call him back over to test what is pulling so much power that it is tripping the breaker, but thought I would check here first for some tips. Thank you everyone!...See MoreAmana, or Trane, or something else? Too hot to think!
Comments (18)Sorry, caylos, I don't have the knowledge to compare systems. My price was for a 5 ton XL 16i, clean effects and TCON803, 16 months same as cash, $8300 after rebate. If you have time, get another quote or three. My HVAC story ends more sadly than it began! The drain line was clogged, the emergency shutoff didn't work, and so condensate from a "weep hole" slowly seeped into the drywall box and through the walls under my wood floors. By the time this nightmare is over I'll have moved out of my house for a couple weeks, and the HVAC company's insurance will have paid three times what my system cost in damages. So much for the "quality control" guy. My advice to the forum: check your drain lines and emergency shut off yourself, OFTEN. Right now there is putty blocking the weep hole, so we presume that if the drain were blocked again the water would rise to the level of the emergency shut-off. I'm rather concerned that a piece of putty is the only thing keeping my $8300 A/C system from ruining my house, again. I can't imagine this is a Trane-approved solution....See Moreklem1
