I just read of this in today's Washington Post, which included an article from Margaret Atwood on LeGuin's work. What a loss! Most of her books have made great impressions on me, such as the Earthsea books, including the later ones she wrote, and The Left Hand of Darkness that you mentioned, but also The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas and Rocannon's World, and the more recent Gifts.

I am so very sorry to hear this! I have been reading her books for years and years. She was an amazing writer, able to combine thoughtful examination of the human spirit with a spare but moving use of language. She also had a talent for building vivid, fully realized societies in her stories. I suspect she got that from her parents, who were famous anthropologists and writers of the early 20th century.

I was so sorry to hear this. I had just finished a book of her short stories The Birthday of the World. Such a talented and thought provoking writer, not to mention a great storyteller.

I was also sad to see this. I have read The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, but none of her other work. I picked up a copy of The Left Hand of Darkness yesterday and just started it last night. Time to fill that gap in my reading history!

I've read many of her books and stories, and as a memorial, re-read The Lathe of Heaven earlier this week.
