Can you tell me where I am going wrong with my seedlings?
Comments (3)those jiffy peat pots are notorious for containing active cobweb mold spores just waiting to get wet to start colonizing the pellet. Take some H2O2 (Hydrogen Peroxide) and mix it with water at a ratio of about 3 parts H20 to 1 part H2O2 and give the mold a couple direct shots. You'll want to mix this up fresh every time because H2O2 breaks down into water when exposed to light - now you know why the bottles are always brown... ;-p As a fungus, cobweb mold is a very fast colonizer and will "lock-up" a substrate (your peat moss) in no time flat and your plants are literally drowning inside the moldy peat moss because the gas exchange has come to a standstill inside your little pots. --- If you're plants down bounce back after that you'll have to either chaulk them up as a lost cause or - if you're really dedicated - you break them out of hte pots, remove as much "dirt" as you can from their roots and dip their roots directly in full-strength H2O2 and then planting them in a new medium. But unless you're dealing with some really exotic plant that's a real pain to germinate from seed (i.e. gerbera daisies) I wouldn't go through the hassle. Considering seeds are only a couple dollars each, you have to weight the effort .vs. the opportunity cost of just starting over. <shrug> I should go back to school for mycology, heh....See MoreOh No! Comments (4)Ariel, That is definitely Spider mite damage to the leaves. Nothing you have done wrong. Treat it now and then again in 5-7 days. I have been using Brian's mix which is 1Litre of water 1Tbsp liquid dish soap 1Tbsp olive oil mix this in a spray bottle and shake vigorously while using to keep all dispersed in water. Do this in the evening (No sun on it while it is on) and spray off with plain water in the morning or even a few hours later. Spray top and undersides of leaves and even the caudex. They are hard to see and the spray is a contact solution. Some use just water and dish soap, but I like Brian's because the oil will smother the mites and they cannot get it off. Works well with aphids also. Rick...See MoreI'm in LA-lower AL and have a pepper problem?
Comments (1)If you have had as much rain as we have, the yellowing and blooms falling off is probably due to too much water. I had cucumbers that didn't look any better than the day I planted them about a month ago. I finally mulched heavily to try to block out some moisture and they are looking better - growing and blooming. Plus, here in the central part of Alabama, we haven't had real warm nights until recently and I think that has something to do with "growth". Good luck. If they don't grow, there is always the Farmer's Market! Mimi...See Morewhat have I done?
Comments (6)I'm inclined to think it is transplant shock, especially if you were not incredibly gentle with the roots. Think about everything on Scott's list too. If the wind has been blowing hard there like it has blown here, no wonder they look unhappy. Did you water them in well after you transplanted them? I'd be a little concerned about the compost too unless it is your own home-made compost and you've used it before with no problem. I'd be especially concerned if it is a compost that's high in manure. Regarding the hardening off of plants, a reputable wholesaler should harden off the plants so they gradually become accustomed to the outdoor light/wind after being raised in a sheltered greenhouse or low or high tunnel. However, I've seen plants with sunburned leaves on the shelves at retailers this year so I know they were sent from the wholesale to retailer before they were hardened off. Plants that have sunburnt will have faded out/bleached out leaves or white, tan or light brown splotches on parts of the leaves. Tell us what it is about the plants that look bad. Wilting? Discoloration? Straight stem but droopy leaves? Leaves yellowing from the bottom of the plant upward? What size container did they come from? Did you transplant a single plant from a container to the ground or did you maybe find the container had 3 plants so you separated them out and planted each individually? The more detail you give us about what you did when planting, the better the chance we'll be able to figure out what might be wrong. Dawn...See Morebikerdoc5968 Z6 SE MI
