That warms my heart.

That's really touching. I would have loved it even more if the homeless guy had been an African American being helped by a Caucasian or other non-African American but that doesn't diminish at all this guy's kindness. The good samaritan has been identified, he's a local (Birmingham) physician.

That act of kindness warms my heart too.

I live in that area of town, and I'm quite sure he wasn't looking for any particular person to receive his coat. Just an act of kindness.

Plus you never see more than one person at that particular intersection.

Today I was heading to work and saw a car with its flashers on and a guy walking down the street with a gas can. The car beside me pulled over and gave him a ride to the gas station down the road. It was about 15 degrees out and I'm sure that guy was very thankful.

Two weeks ago when we had snow come thru, my electricity was flickering. Had moments of panic, and went to my closed condo group on Facebook and asked if anyone had access to extra firewood. About 30 minutes later, a knock on my door and neighbor from next building was standing with a arm load of firewood. Such a relief. And I had just made a big pot of homemade soup, which he quickly accepted some for dinner that night.

Technology will soon be advanced enough to produce everything society needs so that no one has to go without. It lies with us as to whether we will share.

Meaningful work and healthcare for all is a reachable goal. We have to ask for it.

Show support for those who show vision and courage. The majority of Americans want to solve our problems, not to stir up anger between groups. Any time we get divided up, we lose. Keep your focus on the real needs of the nation.

Glenda, thank you for posting this. It has given me some ideas of how I can be kind to someone in a simple way that may not have occurred to me otherwise. I hope this post inspires other the same way. Thank you.

That was a wonderful thing for that man to do, Glenda, thanks for sharing the story. Elmer, I don't think a person's skin color should make any difference when they need help. I think a white person in need should be helped the same as a person of any other color.

I agree, woodrose. Remember this touching event took place in a residential area of Birmingham, a city and a state with many fine people but far too many who still think the nation took a wrong turn when Civil Rights laws were enacted and segregation and other Jim Crow laws overturned. I go there pretty often (certainly compared to other places in that region) and to this Westerner, the racial tensions are still palpable. All I said was in that setting, a cross-racial encounter would have been especially meaningful to me.

Elmer, you haven't been where I live in Alabama. You need to quit making broad statements about a place you don't live. I could talk about about all the Californians and just pick a popular notion. It is a huge state, but I'm sure everyone of you are all the same and hold the same views. (sarcasam)

I'm sure there are people in all areas of the country that are stuck somewhere in the past.

I don't know where you live. Does it matter? If you're saying there's no black/white tension, dislike, distrust where you are, that neighborhoods and society in general are integrated, that's great. That's not how it is in many other parts of the state I've visited, and certainly not in much of Birmingham and suburbs. I see things with my own eyes and, being a friendly person, have spoken with a lot of people there on my visits. My impressions could be wrong but I don't think so.

glenda, as in face-to-face group discussions, how a conversation starts doesn't set a firm rule as to what should or should not be said. I expressed my view and have responded to comments directed to me. Does it displease you when the topic strays during an in-person conversation? It shouldn't.

What's up with the name calling? It's kinda funny to call someone mean names for messing up a thread about kindness. Thread derailments are common in an open community like the KT. I've known real bullies and Elmer isn't one, imo.

Back on topic, it makes me happy to see random acts of kindness. When my mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer, she withdrew a few thousand dollars and handed out $100 bills to people who looked like they needed it, or if she just wanted to brighten someone's day. She would chat with them for a bit. They were touched, but I think it was even more beneficial to my mom! I try to follow her example.
