Glass Act: Windows & Doors
If there is one thing you should NEVER cheap out on, it's windows & doors. Cheap versions will cost you in energy expenses, and will cheapen the look of your entire facade, inside and out. I'm not saying you have to go all Marc Chagall stained glass or anything, but definitely give time and thought to whether or not you want panes, if so, how many, how it will look from inside and out, open and shut, and spend a few extra bucks on quality.
If you are lucky enough to have a home with old leaded glass or Victorian soldered details, I am green with envy. Here I've gathered a few examples of my favorite windows & doors, from classic to uber-modern, as a resource I'll pull out for inspiration on many future projects. Please let me know about any I've missed out on so that I can add them to the collection!

Abelow Sherman Architects did a wonderful job of mixing old and new in this brownstone. Note the classic window in here has a tiny partner in the transom window over the modern door (you have to look very carefully in this shot). It's a great transition from classic to modern
Again, we've got a classic stained glass transom window over a modern glass door in the same townhouse. Very clever.
This is the same brownstone, and I think these windows and glass door are smashing. The black trim is a great touch.
These windows are so beautiful, and I love the way the geometry helps the doors blend in with the windows. It reminds me of TJ's brilliant triple-sash windows at Monticello.
I'm a sucker for a grid, and red trimmed windows are definitely not something you see every day!
I may be more biased by this view than by the windows themselves here, but the size of the opening sure makes the space!
Lovely Shingle-Style coastal detailing on these.
These doors that let it all in are spectacular. The way they maneuver on that track is really cool too.
Cousin of the doors above.
I am really hard-pressed to guess what goes on in this room. The Scottish Feudal Castle-looking windows confuse me even more.
The Harlequin pattern is broken up by Broadway Boogie-Woogie colors, which makes the pairing of this classic window design with the modern fireplace work.
A greenhouse in the sky.
Modern Cabin.
A Japanese shoji-screen feel.
I'm not sure what's really happening here, but I like it.
Reminds me of the loft in "She's the One," which was the coolest apartment with the best windows ever.
Industrial, Functional, Beautiful.
This door just rules.
Classic two-over-two has a modern look.
Cantilevered. Whoa.
Colonel Mustard, in the Solarium, with the yellow pillow...
