Random act of kindness today!

Yesterday I stopped by a house on my street where a crew was making some repairs to see if they could fix a loose panel of siding on my house, the result of the last storm. This morning at 7:00, two guys stopped with their long ladder to do the repair. Fifteen minutes and a few nails later they were finished and..... NO charge to me! How sweet is that?

Just last week I had to replace my A/C condenser for mucho dollars and I was becoming depressed about the possible cost of fixing the siding panel. So, bless the hearts of these two local workmen!

Good idea! I think they will be on my street for a few more days so I have time to make them something.

I'm sorry Sue, when I read your entry I felt a little embarrassed because I thought "oh gosh, I put myself out there for everyone to see and I didn't follow the instructions right!" I have learned so much from just wandering around here but I guess I'm more behind the scenes. I have a very active trade list and at the bottom is a small description of who I am. I guess I put it in the wrong place so I'll be sure to move it. I have done some great seed trades and have established great relationships with people I do revisit just to say hi. I participate on wintersowing, citrus, New Jersey Trade, seed trade, cacti, other exchange,propagation,and now plant trade. With the extra seeds I've had from the generous members here I've posted on freecycle and have also posted that I would be happy to tend anyone's garden in my area if they don't have the time to do it themselves. I don't have extra money to do all the gardening I would like to do but I have alot of time so that's what I try to share. I really haven't become comfortable with my disability to the point where I share it freely, I just brought it up because I wanted Sally to have an understanding on why I would like her plants instead of just going out and buying some. Kate, you are so right that we all probably have a neighbor that could use a little friendship and I'm so happy that you've been inspired to visit yours. Here I have a cranky old lady next door that thinks I'm completely off my rocker to do any yard work. She says it's a "man's job" and I'm making a big mistake by doing it. LOL! We like her anyway but she has no interest in making her yard look better. There is a lady up the street that has beautiful orchids hanging in her trees and I've tried to be friendly with her but she's not very chatty. So many people just are wary and suspicious when you try to be nice to them. I am looking forward to visiting my dh's new acquaintance. ~Betsy

It's really true there are so many good people in the world. Your story is fantastic Annie! Very memorable. This weekend, we played the Florida Gators on Saturday. It was unseaonably cold, so coffee was in order. Evidently, all the fans thought so, as Starbucks was packed! The man in front of me, a Florida fan, obviously not a Nashvillean (nor a Vandy fan, as I am!), asked his daughter to save his place in line because he had to take his son to the bathroom. She didn't want to. When I offered to save his place, he seemed wary??? but let me. We ended up having a nice conversation. I hope he left Nashville a bit happier to have met us, but I wondered did he not encounter this behavior often enough that he needed to be wary? I think most people are farily friendly. Curious. The neighborhood I just moved to, it is the standard for people who are driving stop and pull over to let cars, bicyclists, runners, etc. pass. It's a "cut through" street, that is only 5-10 minutes from downtown, so it is somewhat unusual, but I really like it! Nice, easy-paced, kind people. Makes me feel all warm inside to drive down the street and have city folk waving hello to me. I always say thank you when someone holds the door. It doesn't bother me if someone doesn't say thank you (what bothers me is someone rushing to go out the door I am opening to go in, but those folks are rare, THANKFULLY!). I also let the person who held the door for me go in front of me in line, if there is one. You'd be amazed how amazed they are. I tell them, "Just because you held the door doesn't mean you end up farther back in line, that's not fair!" Nine times out of ten, they won't take the place. I like those nine the best, the most gentlemanly.

Re being afraid to stop: Sometimes you just have to go with your gut. On several occasions I've seen a car stopped - sometimes on the side of the road, sometimes blocking a lane - on my short drive to/from work. The car is literally held together with duct tape and bungee cords. It's the most pitiful looking vehicle I've ever seen. There is always a man standing nearby who will be gesturing wildly, frantically trying to get someone to stop. He is genuinely scary-looking, and I do make it a point to not judge someone by their appearance (some of the wildest looking people I know are wonderful souls). However, there's something just not quite right about this whole scenario. The man's eyes are crazy and bloodshot. In the car sits at least two, sometimes three, women passengers. They all look completely derelict, and at first glance, you'd think they were just in a broken down car and asking for help. On one occasion when I saw this group, the man had managed to stop a couple in a van. I came upon them just as the person on the passenger's side was quickly rolling up the window and the van was getting out of there as fast as they could. The "wildman" spotted me and frantically attempted to flag me down, even approaching my car at a fast past. I sped off. That whole scene just reeks of scam, although a small part of me still goes out to those people who, for whatever reason, have a "need" to do what they do. Anyway, I do think that sometimes you have to gauge the situation carefully and act as your instincts tell you to act.

Restores your faith in humanity, doesn't it? I've had things like that happen to me and I've also dealt with workmen who are looking to get every extra nickel. The guy who reno'd my bathroom was constantly looking for ways to add extras. It got to be a battle of the wits. He may have gotten extra money out of me then, but he lost in the long run since I do not recommend him to others nor would I hire him again, even though his work was very good.

Be sure to mention their good deed to others.

I think what they did was wonderful and they will think you are wonderful if you take them a homemade treat.

Teresa, I think Snickerdoodles is a great choice! Every male in my family & circle of friends gobbles them up.

That was a very nice thing they did.

Great to hear! Perhaps they were paying it forward for some act of kindness you had accomplished some where along the line.

My RAofK experience wasn't so desperate; I had some "do-dads", for lack of better terminology, that I made for the exterior of my house. The guys installing tile next door came over and stuccoed the 4 do-dads to my columns. Took about 30 minutes. I made lunch for them the next day and they were VERY appreciative but so was I!

Good for those guys, there are still a lot of nice human beings in the world. Snickerdoodles wouldn't be out of the question if it were me either!

I always seem to manage to have someone do something nice for me just when I'm thinking how the world has gone to he!!, and my faith in humanity is restored....

Unexpected gifts like fixing your siding just make my day. Give those guys a big high five along with your yummy cookies. Offer a cold drink and you'll reward them handsomely for their chivalry!

I love hearing stories like this. They have no idea how grateful you are for their kindness, because it was so easy for them. Snickerdoodles is a perfect 'Thank You Guys'!

Mustangs - again - helpful guys and a delicious lunch shown as appreciation - nice acts of kindness for all parties.

My wonderful neighbor randomly cuts the grass, that is our property, along the loooong driveway. Me thinks he does it for the nice dinner cards that they get from us! Every act of kindness should be rewarded in one way or another. I guess I need to make some Snickerdoodles.

I love these stories.

How very nice of those gentlemen. And yes, snickerdoodles are what the men in my family love the most! (Well, second maybe to apple pie.)
