Do I need supplemental light for lettuce
Comments (20)Wow, I wish my lettuce would be ready in 40 days...I don't think I'm even close, not in the winter. And wow, everybody got cranky overnight... Off topic...Weebus, I had a hard time believing it, too, but containerized citrus benefits from thorough watering and thorough drying in between, with quarterly flush using four times the container volume in water. Citrus media (is that the right term?) is/are very quick draining, often using CHC or sand as a main ingredient. Washing the water through the soil doesn't harm the roots any more than a 110% watering. As for salt buildup, I think I'll start another thread. As for lights, that's too big for another thread, lights requires a whole new forum! Will anyone care to agree with me that fluorescent lights will work but they have to be VERY close to the tops of the plants, like 3-4 inches away? HID will work...for lettuce MH may be a little better than HPS. HPS is supposed to be better at triggering flowers. MH gives a balanced light, good for foliage and photosynthesis, and therefore it should be good for lettuce. Comments (15)Thanks Annie, I did give half an attempt at this before with no luck in my area. So, IâÂÂll give it another go. I was thinking today that one of the other reasons I didnâÂÂt go to the sleep clinic is that my many online searches on my sleep problems never showed anything that pertained to me so I got a bit discouraged about it all. Today however I came across some info on Ciradian Rhythm sleep disorders CRSDs or CSDs and found my fit. There are five types, I am a match for the Delayed Sleep Syndrome. My brother also had some sort of sleep syndrome. He would walk around in a sound sleep and sometimes talk or seem agitated. It was hard to wake him. Wrttersblock, maybe I'll meet you at the clinic one of these days. If we end up going there are not many around our neck of the woods....See MoreKale is getting leggy even under grow lights - what am I doing wrong?
Comments (11)"For instance, growing kale seedlings at 80F sounds like a recipe for failure - this is a cool-weather crop which would not appreciate anything over temps in the upper 60s. The same advice applies for growing most vegetable seedlings, including tomatoes." Did you read my previous comment about the effect of light and dark temperature differences on stem length? Did you ever try growing a plant with a higher dark period temperature than light period temperature? I did by growing tomato seedlings with lights on during the night and lights off during the day in a greenhouse. See http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/2005610/how-to-easily-supplement-fluorescent-with-incandescent-light. I was struwwelpeter then. I call your attention to the following: "In hopes of keeping plants stocky, I will try to keep the average dark temperature higher than the average light temperature. To do this, the lights are on only from 6 PM to 10 AM. The greenhouse heater is set to go on below 55 deg. F. and the greenhouse ventilator fans and shutter are set to go on at more than 95 deg. F.. I am aiming for 80 deg. F. light temperature and 95 deg. F dark temperature." "To my amazement, these tomato plants are shorter but heavier looking than their greenhouse grown counterparts. The weather was mostly sunny, and, my Gro-Lux bulbs are decades old and used. Who would have guessed?" "Left to right, daylight, Gro-Lux, Gro-Lux Plus Incandescent. You can read the variety on some of the tags. The pots are 4.06 inches diameter at the top outside. http://www.general-cathexis.com/images/BigZac3.6.jpg http://www.general-cathexis.com/images/BestBoy3.6.jpg http://www.general-cathexis.com/images/VelvetRed3.6.jpg The biggest difference is with Velvet Red (which some people claim is the best tasting cherry tomato that isn't sweeter than a normal tomato). This is the first time I have grown it. It is supposed to have bluish foliage and fuzzy fruit."...See MoreLED supplemental lighting for my plants. Need some help.
Comments (1)Are compact fluorescents available in your area? Sometimes those can work if you find the highest wattage the lamp can handle in a bright white (daylight--more of the blue spectrum). Depending on how many bulbs your lamp has, and how close you put them to the bulbs, you could do a pretty decent setup with compact fluorescents. I don't know that you'll get tons of growth, but it is a good supplement when days are short. The LED lights seem trickier, and just from what I've read are more expensive up front. But I'm no expert. This article explains it pretty well without getting too technical. http://homeguides.sfgate.com/grow-plants-cfl-lights-43203.html...See MoreJeff (5b)
