Outlet Ideas between kitchen countertop and bar.

Looking for ideas..

Long story short - doing a complete remodel of kitchen. Opening up a 12' section of wall so will be open to living room (engineered plans for this). Will be a 12' long counter top 36" high against that wall and there will be a 42" high bar so we can sit on other side of counter area (basically in living room).

Ideas that I need are what to do with that 6" and also outlets for that area.

Guessing people normally use counter material (granite) (backspash) as a 6" filler. Then install outlets through the backspash?

I think keeping the counter all one height looks and feels better in a space. I like being able to set large items and projects out on one flat surface. My parents have your exact setup and I thought it was cool as a kid but I like my counter height seating SO much better! You can use pop up outlets since the run is so long.

Thanks everyone for responding so quickly. Kathycooks, The Finished Kitchen Blog was especially helpful. Visuals of real kitchens were exactly what I needed. So far I haven't found a lot of raised bars. But I'll post pictures of the ones I've found so far to have them in one place for reference. It appears there is no right or wrong thing to do in this area. I found examples of both tile and granite on the other side of raised bars.

I changed the non-working outlets on the counter top and made sure the wires were connected tightly. I still am not getting any power. The voltage tester is lighting up when I place it on the black wire and the white wire as well. I don't think the white wire should power the tester? right? Any thoughts on this? thanks

Nothing that I know of for the NEC. The things that come to mind is that there is a maximum distance under an overhang (12" if I recall, I don't have the code here today) that the legally required outlets can be located to count. Is there a lower countertop on one side? Perhaps he's saying he can't fit the outlet in the step up without raising it (still seems suspect).

I suggest doing your research on fantasy brown if you are considering it. It sounds to me like a marble. (Super white is another that is often billed as quartzite but is is actually usually marble.). Not that there is anything wrong with marble--I chose it for the ktichen in our last house, but I did so knowing what I was getting. Those countertop geology threads are really informative.

I would layout the outlets horizontally in that backsplash, and yes, I would probably use countertop material, but matching the tile used in the other backsplash areas is common as well. Try to work the outlet position into the tile layout.

Our outlets are laid out horizontally and yes the back splash is a continuation of the counter top material. I have also seen people use the same tile back splash that they used throughout their kitchen. We are renovating our island to remove the bar height portion - have you considered keeping is all one level? It will look more open if it's one level and you'll have more usable counter top space, stools won't have to be so high... just a thought.

I was going to suggest pop-up outlets too. I agree with saypoint. Post this in the kitchen forum too. The folks there were super helpful when I redid my kitchen.
