Raised bars and the area between counters???

My stone person is making templates and I can't believe I hadn't considered what to put in the area between the two counters. For those of you with raised a bar, did you use tile, use your counter material or something else???? Any pictures would be appreciated.

If you're talking about the narrow vertical wall between the height of the bar and the counter, we went with travertine tile, which is also being used as the backsplash around the whole kitchen. It won't be complete until next week so, no picture available yet.

I think this is a YMMV sort of thing.

We taped up a stone sample that corresponded to our backsplash and also taped up a piece of the granite from the counter top. We preferred the tile, but IÂm sure others would have chosen the granite. So, I suggest you do what we did Â look for a sample of what you would like Â get a couple in fact - then tape them all up and see which you prefer.

I think the answer is, Definitely maybe. It depends upon the configuration of your rooms. As a general rule of thumb, I'd be more inclined to build some sort of "divider" between the kitchen and the great room ... I'd be less inclined to do so if the island divides the kitchen and a dining area. I don't know that I'd do bar stools extending into the great room, but without having seen the plan, I won't say that's an absolute. I also share what seems to be a universal dislike of too-high bar stools. I'm very short, so they're a problem for me -- and they're also a problem for children. My daughter's college apartment has no dining table, just two bar stools, and they are super high. She and her friends sit on the floor and eat at the coffee table. I usually just take her out to eat when I visit.

I think it depends on your layout and how you will use the space. If it's a peninsula dividing the kitchen from another room, then it often makes sense to have the raised bar to create a visual barrier, although counter height is nice if the work space is limited. If it's an island in the middle of the kitchen, counter height makes more sense in most cases to make the whole island usable work space and to keep from chopping up the room. Generally, counter height eating bars make the kitchen seem larger, too. I was going for openness and wanted to make my space feel larger, so even if I had gone with a peninsula in my kitchen, it would have been counter height.

Is there a reason you want the bar raised vs a counter height bar? I had originally wanted EXACTLY what you describe-ponywall and builtup bar height seating. However, we considered COST as a major factor and it wasn't worth it to us--we wanted seating. Someone can sit counter height just as easily(in fact, I find it much easier to sit counter height than bar height)as at bar height. Is the 12 inches not adequate to put small counter height stools underneath for seating? (I ask this somewhat selfishly as our new plan has a 12 inch out from the cabinets for counter height seating-I'm just hoping this isn't a big mistake. Should we go 14?) Also, can you take a picture of the space? If we went bar height, it would be REALLY close to the ceiling for taller people and it would block the view of people in the other rooms. We actually have a wet bar, so not having the bar height wasn't a big deal since we already have it elsewhere. Just curious as to why you'd want to incur an added expense if the sole purpose is seating which you can get just by extending a countertop. As for the original question, though, I'd build a ponywall, keep the counterspace, build in the outlets into the side as stated for full functionality IF the space allows the additional space for a wall without overly intruding into another space. This was yet another reason we couldn't do it. The added width intruded into a space that you see immediately on entry from our front door.

On some projects, hitting the tile with a hammer will remove most of it. Depending on the mortar used, it is brittle and will simply fall off the wall after a blow. Nothing hard, don't damage the wood or any other substrate behind. This works on about 1/3 of the reno projects. When it works, its a huge time saver plus saving the substrate.

We had this situation in our last house and continued our backsplash tile there.

I like a tile or something like that. I like the emphasized change, myself. On the other hand, I like the matching countertop material too!

Thanks everyone for responding so quickly. Kathycooks, The Finished Kitchen Blog was especially helpful. Visuals of real kitchens were exactly what I needed. So far I haven't found a lot of raised bars. But I'll post pictures of the ones I've found so far to have them in one place for reference. It appears there is no right or wrong thing to do in this area. I found examples of both tile and granite on the other side of raised bars.
