If you want to see a microclimate in action, drive from Orinda to Oakland or better still Treasure Island. 15 minutes and 25 degrees. In San Jose and the rest of the county - the northern part nearest the Bay - a bit windier, a bit cooler sometimes (5-8 degrees on a summer day, not much), a bit less rain. To the south and near the hills - a bit warmer (as above) a bit more rain, a bit less wind. Near water is always windier than at a distance. SDGE (the power company) considers Del Cerro to be a mile or two at most out of its "coastal zone" that starts at the beach and ends around the 805 at that point for power pricing purposes). As I said, "Air conditioning, not all that common in coastal areas (where our place is) is now a standard feature in new construction and more frequently retrofit into older places that didn't have it. " So if you consider Del Cerro inland, that comment may not apply to your experience. But it's hotter there now too. Feeling argumentative?...See MoreNew Heat Pump: Carrier v. Amana v. Bosch?
Comments (15)Installed properly, a properly functioning HP will not experience this condition of being buried, except perhaps in blizzard like conditions that might only happen about once in 20-years. Usually high snowfalls are accompanied by windy conditions that spread snow around. When HP’s are rack mounted above snow lines, have a fan hood and are function properly, this is not usually an issue. Conversely, with geothermal, the undisturbed earth temperature above the 30-foot depth lags behind seasonal air temperature changes by at about 1 season. So that when we start heating, the earth still has most of its stored heat from summer. The same is true for air-conditioning in summer, that the first 30-feet of earth is still cooler from winter, as it has not yet stored all the heat of the summer sun, therefore making geothermal even more efficient due to ground conditions. Air temperature changes are immediate. Earth temperature changes are very gradual. BTW: I live in one of North America’s ‘Snow & Cold Capitals’, Montreal Canada. Comments (89)So for me and how I run heat in my hot climate the difference isn't that much other than a 'feeling' --- you know what comfort is. The heat this thing pumps out compared to the higher cost resistance heat --- there is no comparison in that regard. Over the past couple of weeks I've begun running in air conditioning mode. Oh man I love it even more in air conditioning mode. This thing runs like a dream. I'm a guy who likes a 'cool' home. In my crazy climate (Katy, Texas) -- this system is awesome. Operationally speaking I paid over $200.00 in one month last year to run the old beater single speed air conditioner. While I have a 4 zoned system... I did that for a reason. To show that a single speed system doesn't save anything in terms of operational costs when paired with a zone system. Because? When a 4 ton AC (or whatever size it is -capacity wise- not physical size of the unit) runs it is doing the same amount of work. That doesn't cut operational costs. An inverter (fully variable runs based on load being put on it) which will drop operational costs because it is only doing the work you require it to do. So paired with a 'properly' zoned system --- the difference is? reduced humidity, better comfort... a feeling. Picture an autumn day, the air is crisp. Nearly everyone alive knows that feeling. Now imagine that inside your home. Yeah, game changer! How much will this save me? Stay tuned... by the end of the summer 2020 I should have a 'cool' story to tell....See MoreHeat pump quotes
Comments (56)The neat thing about air conditioners is that they all subscribe to the same theory: suck, squeeze , bang , blow. What are the makes of the two-three year service calls? Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Amana, American Standard, Goodman, York, Ruud, Rheem. (not in any particular order, they all break especially in the realm of deal of the century type of implementation... it is the most common reason I am told in person at the time I'm there, not just saying it here for theatrical purpose -- It's been going on for nearly 30 years now that I can report on.) I've heard nightmare scenarios on Bosch as well, haven't lived any of that personally yet. But I don't have half as many "dumb" problems as some due because most of the time they prescribe to nonsense. My opinion. I have a right to that opinion with 30 years in HVAC this month. Even if you don't like it. ;-) 90% of my job is telling you things you aren't going to like. Some like to make friends -- how do you do that? lie, cheat, steal -- not uncommon for me to be viewed as the enemy UNTIL? -- you get to decide that. What is your breaking point. Everyone has one. Gimmicks don't last forever. Tick Tock. -- all that said Bosch is young in my market came here just over 4 years ago in 2019) In my experience the operation of an AC -- they suck (mildly) and blow with purpose. If it doesn't suck, it ain't gonna blow for long... lol. If the equation changes to squeezing and banging -- get your pocket book ready in this heat. (100F+ here, no joke) Not sure why people like to think that certain brands (makes) are immune to trouble. -- it's an AC myth....See Moremike_home
