Pls help: BM 'Moonshine' or Dunn-Edwards 'Swiss Coffee'?
Comments (5)Is BM "Moonshine" best against the natural light finished red oak or is "Swiss coffee" best? Depends on how you want to define best. Moonshine is in the green hue family. It's very pale and it's grayed down, but it's a green. Next to red oak, its green characteristics will be even more prominent. Technically, it's a good pairing because red and green are complementary colors. When closely juxtaposed in context, two complementary colors enhance the inherent masstone of each other. Complementary color schemes are the most dynamic or energetic because of the hi level of hue contrast. Swiss Coffee is likely going to show more creamy. Depending on light sources, could be almost a buttercream. SC is probably the more classic choice for a Spanish bungalow. Classic doesn't mean more *correct* it just means classic, no more no less. Contrast would be less than Moonshine, the red oak would be less pronounced. Both would work as neutrals with future additions, elements to the room. If you've tested and both colors render nicely in the space, it might just come down to picking the one you like best....See MoreDunn Edwards - Boutique Beige
Comments (1)As we all may or may not know, I don't do the undertones thing. Neither does Dunn-Edwards. What DE has is a killer color order system. Boutique Beige's notation is as follows: 1.98Y/8.0/2.5. The "Y" tells you it is in the yellow hue family. Yellow is in between the Yellow-Red (orange) hue family, and the Green-Yellow hue family, and 1.98 tells you that Boutique Beige is closer to orange than green-yellow. Good to know. 8.0 is on a lightness value scale that runs 1 (black) to 10 (white). 8.0 is closer to 10 (white) so you know Boutique Beige is a light color. 2.5 is about chroma. Chroma answers the question "how colorful is it". Chroma runs on a scale from 0 (no color) to approximately 14 (pure, vivid color). This one goes to an "approximate" number because this scale varies based on hue - some hues are naturally more chromatic than others. The 2.5 tells you that Boutique Beige is not a vivid color rather it is near neutral, soft and toned. So even though I've never used the color, the notation tells me about all its important attributes. If you have a California Paints in your area, they license Dunn-Edwards' Perfect Palette and you can get DE Perfect Palette colors from them. Comments (10)petlover, it will match the red. Shale is prob just a smudge darker than the RP the best way is to grab a sample and bring in home. you can see RP, collingwood and Shale together try the Shale. Graystone is also darker, so maybe try that as well. you'll have to see what it looks like on your wall w/your lighting. Shale is the same tone as Revere, so ask the paint guy if he could darken it by 25% without it affecting the overall 'tones'. But I think it will be darker on your wall than the revere....See MoreDunn Edwards Cloud vs Miner's Dust
Comments (2)I just tested DE Miner's Dust, while it is a lovely greige it is not the color that I am looking for. I want something less beige/gray and more gray. Miner's Dust on top, Big Chill on the bottom. About 4 years ago I painted our kitchen SW Silverplate 7649 but had it cut by 25%. The end result is it looks very close to SW Big Chill 7648 with Silverplate still being slightly darker. Both of these colors are on the same color strip so it makes sense that they would be similar but only different in LRV and chroma. My kitchen wall with Silverplate (25% reduced in pigment), foam board with Big Chill, no changes in formula. My biggest surprise was the difference in Big Chill mixed with Sherwin Williams/Lowes brand and Dunn Edwards base. Look at the photos below. It is hard to believe these are both Big Chill. I have to admit Dunn Edwards paint went on much smoother and Big Chill looks even better mixed with DE white base. The nice people at DE told me yesterday that their base is the whitest of all other paint manufactures. Now, I have no idea if that is true but Big Chill definitely looks better IMHO mixed in DE white base, the proof is in the photo! Because I have been so happy with DE and the service I have gotten not to mention my painter won't use any other paint than DE, I am looking at DE Cloud DEC791. It is very close to Big Chill. So that will be my next paint sample. SW Big Chill LRV 62 DE Cloud LRV 63 Bottom row, SW Big Chill, DE White DEW380 for crown moulding, doors and baseboards, DE Cloud DEC791. Top DE First Snow DEW390, considering this for the ceiling! Please let me know what gray you ended up choosing. If you like DE Cloud and still feel it is too dark then try it lighten by 25%....See Moreannnw3
