what color cabinets would you choose with black appliances?
Comments (10)I'm not good at giving detained decorating directions--although you might checkt the decorating forum. I would Google or whatever, "tropical" decorating themes, also look at British colonial-- think dark woods, plus rattan or bamboo. Look at fabrics or bedding in tropical prints--do certain color combinations really send you? You might find a picture of a room that is not a kitchen, but that you can base your kitchen on--especially if is combined with family room. Dark woods and appliances can look good with all the citrus colors --more acid-y yellows and greens, corals and peaches and so forth. There is also a great color scheme using dark woods, white/ivories, and ocean blues, but I am not a "cool" person so I don't gravitate to that--but can admire it in another's room. Decide which things you already have and will not change--? you said curtains--such as sofa fabric, rug; what are you able to change or add for accent--maybe don't want wallpaper in kitchen, but found a great tropical print for throw pillows and will pick up some of those colors. It is easier to collect some of these swatches or samples, and photos, and then try to see what color or stain of cabinet seems best and most "timeless" (though there may be almost no such thing), because certainly wall paint colors and room accent pieces can be changed over the years. I think you are still refining your "vision," so I would work on getting that in a concrete form--your "story board" of colors, materials, combinations that send you--once you get it, you will be better able to see what choices to make to translate that into kitchen materials....See MoreWould you choose a house with wood in kitchen over tile?
Comments (34)Mary, ladybug, kelly, dockside, quirkyquercus, cmarlin, and pattycakes - sorry to be so long in responding. When in a hurry, which I have been, I tend to just jump onto kitchens - will try to check back more often here. Your varied input is comforting, because it shows that it is not the end of the world that I decided in a given direction, which was tile. It was a last minute panic decision, as a friend with a great sense of style who consulted with a ton of decorators for her remodel exclaimed often that a "yellow floor" (referring to my consideration of maple or birch or white oak to sort of match the site finished)would be a disaster with the mandarin cherry and blue pearl, and to keep the color scheme all together. Between seeing posts about the continuity of the wood (especially as we have the rest of that level as well as the upstairs in the site finished, my GC recently told me it was a stained red oak, but it looks like white oak), and talking with a shop owner KD who also was a tile fanatic, I caved. Don't know why, because terrik's looks great. And - it cost 3-4 more days of labor for the extra joist sistering and floor prep to go with the tile. That alone should have made me stay my ground! I try to appreciate the gains from it - and it will look great if and when I add some white cabinetry for an island and perimeters (I chose American Olean Highland Ridge mountain), but I should have trusted that the look I was going for - downplaying the bluepearl into a more casual, country look with a birch floor, would have been just great - not for everyone, but maybe for those who would like my woods abutting the large backyard. It is hard to know when to give yourself over to others advice or to keep your stand, but hopefully I can get better at discerning this, as I have erred in both directions. Anyway - thanks for letting me vent! Someday I will find my digital camera and learn how to post pix!!! Honest! (Probably long after project is tucked away :-( ) Ciao!...See MoreHELP!! What paint color would you choose?
Comments (14)Sorry, Ethan, I deleted all those photos out of my computer when I finished, and right now it looks like Jake is MIA. I did do a darker avocado, though. Green balances orange well. Orange also looks great with ivory. I love orange too, but prefer it as an accent color. That sofa is a huge block of orange. However, I've seen so many beautiful photos of designer rooms I'm convinced that a good designer could come along and make that sofa look fabulous....See MoreNeed new exterior paint and trim. What colors would you choose?
Comments (6)I feel that if you paint the trim around the window, then you should paint all other trim. It would look odd otherwise and honestly, it would look like only parts of the home have been freshened up. There's a house I drive past that apparently buys a run of siding as the owners' budget allows. So it's been a slowly disappearing face of Tyvek wrap for the past 4 years. Personally. I wish they had just saved up over the years and done it all at once. So I also vote for just waiting until you can do it all at once. If I can barely tolerate/ignore the exterior of my house for 12 years, anyone can. I don't think the other responder was suggesting that you paint the garage door the same CURRENT color, but instead, once you do paint the stucco, make the garage the same color. I personally think cream colored house, or gray, with black trim would look sharp. Can you find more of those eaves and add them to the entrance at some point? Have no clue if it's possible, just a thought. Please make sure whatever siding you paint, you paint it all, not just what faces the street. Trim those shrubs too. Just saw that brick on the front, if that's the only place you have the brick, I'd budget for removing it. Looks ridiculous. Keep us posted....See Morespottedappy
