Exposed septic line

Judy Chung

Just moved into a house and discovered that a couple feet of the septic line leading out to the drain field is exposed due to soil and surrounding hill erosion. With the drop in temps, it has frozen which means septic headache for us. Septic guys came out today and while the one day of 65 degree weather melted some ice and they still had to manually open and remove two huge chunks of ice from the pipe. It is running again-but the temperatures are dropping just as rapidly and afraid it will freeze.

Do we cover the exposed pipe with tons of dirt as a stopgap measure?

How do we remedy this long-term. BTW, the drain field is in in a RPA (resource protected area) and also runs right along a stream...

Thanks.
