EXPOSED! Show Off Your Bricks

Houzz Contributor. Hi there! I live in a 1940s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia.

Exposed brick has had kind of a trend roller coaster ride. When true lofts became all the rage, it was huge. Then it became passe. Now, who knows? I say who cares? I love the beauty of exposed brick, especially when it is original to the space and helps tell the story of the structure.
Whether it's a whole wall, a tiny peek, or even painted white, exposed brick adds texture and gives us something to notice and think about. I say, you cannot go wrong with it. I don't care what the too cool for school design people say!

I think I have marked this shot for about ten different ideabooks; it's so divine. One of the many elements that makes the space is that warm brick wall.
Because I lived in Virginia for so long, I think of brick as very American. What I like here is how well the Asian pieces work with the exposed wall. It is very East-meets-West.
This is a great example of how the older material, bricks, can work very well with newer materials like steel in a modern space.
This is the same space as the one above. I thought this shot showed off the way the daylight shows off the bricks.
This is a peek-a-boo brick situation. There's something kind of, um, Georgia O'Keefe going on here...just showing you all the brick possibilities. Also, note how carefully lighting was considered in this space.
This is simply peek at a column of brick in a modern space. I think the space is so much more interesting with the brick texture added to it. It keeps it from being too sterile.
Painting the bricks white makes this room so serene and light. The bricks provide a bit of rough and rhythmic texture, which again, keeps the room from being a real yawner.
I keep going back to this photo. Every line is perfectly crisp and stands out. The black trimmed windows and door say "I am rectangle, hear me roar!" What makes the space so alluring is the contrast of those vertical black-lined rectangles against the whitewashed brick. Superb!
I love that you can see the old filled in arch space within the brick patterns. It helps tell the story of the space's former life.
