Gardenweb and the Houzz Team.
Comments (16)It's a shame. Houzz is basically a corporate site run by corporate propeller heads -- they made a lot of money on it, they went out buying other sites, and their fate will be the same as Yahoo and so many others. If there is still a houzz.com in 10 years (or five), nobody on the current staff will be there anyway. I've done time at these places and know how it works. When they have investors interested, they aggressively buy out sites that have real followings and real users, like Gardenweb. And it never turns out good for the sites that are bought. The UI here is done by some millennial in some San Francisco cubicle who not only never made a post on Gardenweb, but who never even read a post on Gardenweb. They don't care, they don't get it, they just have stock options and huge salaries and a $580,000 condo to pay for. Gardenweb was such a wonderful site. It was easy to read, nicely designed, well indexed, and it had a community. As far as I can tell, just about all of that is gone....See Morenew site format
Comments (38)I found a way to get rid of all that blinding white. At least for Chrome users. Chrome has a extension for free called "Screen Shader". It changes the background to a softer color, their default is a soft orange, but you can change to a few other colors such as pink, soft blue, various tans, and black. You can also adjust the intensity from a very subtle color to more vibrant. I think it can also vary it automatically from day to night. Anyway, it's nice and it's free. Here's a link; screen-shader If you use other browers, check out their ext. and apps. most have similar free add ons. For Firefox there's no squint I didn't even realize how much it was hurting my eyes until I undid the white. Like when some annoying background noise stops, so relieved!...See Moredislike the new format, how about you?
Comments (13)I log in at either the link provided for any additional comment and get sent right back to proper comment in that discussion. Or I log in at http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums. And that sends me to the list of Garden Web forums. I really have no interest in anything else from houzz at this point and find that I do not need to wade through it to get to the Garden Web part. I continue to feel that houzz log in is faster than the old Garden Web one was. BTW one does not have to use anybody's web front page. Each page has its own URL and you can almost always go directly to that. If a log in is required that usually pops up automatically all on its own. I take my internet shortcuts directly from the URL in the address box of the pages I frequent....See MoreAnyone found the secret yet to this new forum format?
Comments (12)Joanne- I am sure they will enjoy the presentation. (And drive to the store to buy more Optimaras). Thing is - humidity is house specific- and drier houses probably will need a heavier mix with vermiculite to retain the water. Like we use to say - buy AV mix- and split it with perlite. The lady from New Jersey who posted today asking for help with her not too happy AVs added 50% perlite - and in the way she grows- it didn't retain enough moisture for them to prosper. In my conditions on wicks and mats - they would probably be very happy. So - whatever works for you, Joanne - will work in your area. The further from your conditions - the more tweaking will be required. There is no universal soil recipe to end all recipes...Good growers - adjust! We all have a wonderful free tool. It is our index finger. Stick it in the pot - and it will tell you if the soil is dry or wet, too loose or too compressed... (Just do not show them your middle finger 8-O!) I....See Moreaegis1000
