I second the recommendation for "Li" jujube. Asian pears are not considered low maintenance here because of fireblight, otherwise I'd have them on my landscaping plan. For taste and texture, "Korean Giant" is my favorite asian. "Housi" and "Shinko" are more popular, although "Housi" is more susceptible to fire flight. "Korean Giant" has BIG fruit, and ripens very late (mid to late Sept here), so you might want to be sure that'll work in your area. KG is also a good pollenizer for other varieties -- not all variety combinations make good pairs for pollenation.

You are probably reminiscing about Hachiya. That one looks like a big orange acorn, is astringent until ripe and will splat on the ground when it is. But oh so good. I grew up with a Hachiya tree and just can't get used to Fuyu-type persimmons. But what did I plant? Suruga, Hyakume, Maru and Chocolate. Three of which are "cinnamon" persimmons - the flesh gets brown flecks or turns brown when pollinated and the flavor is improved over the non-pollinated ones.

Redsun, I asked a similar question in 2012 and got those with experience to share their opinions. I started this year with Nikita's Gift and may order another persimmon for next spring I don't think Fuyu will survive our zone without protection. If we have the winter like last year, even Nikita's Gift may need protection to survive, too. I don't think I have energy or determination to protect my trees the way Tony does. It's a Japanese Persimmon, Fuyu and Taninashi being more commonly sold. Growth rate painfully slow in my experience.
