Jujube and Persimmon Variety selection help!

Hi,

I recently moved into a house with some space in my backyard and I am looking into purchasing and planting some fruit trees. My original thoughts were apples/peaches/plums... the trees easily found at local shops. However, with some researching on gardenweb, I quickly realized that for a person that's never had fruit trees to care for, those are not easy trees to grow and maintain.

I have now made a new list of relatively easier fruit trees in my zone: asian persimmon, jujubes, hardy kiwis, asian pears, raspberries and blueberries.

I am thinking about going with persimmon, jujubes, possibly asian pear and fall raspberries (to avoid birds from stealing). I wanted help with variety selections.

I want two persimmons, one astringent and one non-astringent. something that will be a good producer with manageable tree size.

I also want two jujubes, I have already decided that one will be honey jar, but I also want another variety that is a good producer and good for dual purpose; fresh eating and drying. any suggestions?

any suggestions on asian pears and fall raspberries as well as a good place to purchase these trees will also be greatly appreciated.

Persimmon pick hana fuyu or ichi kei jiro for non astringent, for astringent you can choose Saijo, sheng.
Jujubes Li is a good perfumer for me here in pa.

I second the recommendation for "Li" jujube.

Asian pears are not considered low maintenance here because of fireblight, otherwise I'd have them on my landscaping plan. For taste and texture, "Korean Giant" is my favorite asian. "Housi" and "Shinko" are more popular, although "Housi" is more susceptible to fire flight. "Korean Giant" has BIG fruit, and ripens very late (mid to late Sept here), so you might want to be sure that'll work in your area. KG is also a good pollenizer for other varieties -- not all variety combinations make good pairs for pollenation.

As I do not get a lot of time to read all I would Like when I do I find some very interesting commits and I am thankful We do have many persimmons available this year and others we are sold out of but this coming season we will have a large selection to choose from as we will have some many root stock that it will take the majority of the farm trees scion wood to graft all the root stock we will have . Many new and exciting cultivars will be introduced and some for the first time cultivars such as Kasandra , Sistroyonka = big sister and a few that are so large and hardy that you would swear they are Kaki Last winter was a very hard one for us as the winter temps reach minus 23.4 Celsius or -11 degrees F and we lost 268 grafted Kaki trees there are some survivors like Korea Kaki, Inchon, Vaniglia, , CHinibel, Miss Kim, Shan Xi, Orest, and Chibacha that had not winter injury at all look forward to talking with all of you Cliff England

Yes, wild jujube used for rootstock does not taste as good as the name varieties. Rootstock jujube has small fruits and very sour but sometimes if you are lucky to have it crossed with a name varieties then the fruits taste a little sweeter. It is very easy to graft them. When this tree is young it does not bear much. My other trees are small, but if sweet is what you're looking for, then you have one of the best tasting varieties and don't really need anything else. It will take about five to seven years before you get a nice amount of fruit. The tree needs to get established and is slow growing. Just protect it from rabbits etc. Having any another variety would help pollination. The fruit quality will get better and in a few years you'll be happy you have this one. Just give it about a gallon of water per day during the hot season.

I am trying to grow some cultivars of those plants. Most are 1st or 2nd year and sometimes my selections were based on what was available where I was purchasing as much as anything else. Persimmon: Eureka, Fuyu, Great Wall, Izu, Matsumoto Wase Fuyu, Saijo, Tamopan. The only ones that fruited last year were a couple of my Fuyu and a Tamopan; they were in their 2nd year in the ground. I should have more types fruiting this year. My IZUs were just grafted this spring from scion wood I ordered, the rest were spring of 09 barefoot which I potted for a year and planted out this winter. Pomegranate: Kazke, Salavatski, Angel Red, Entek Habi Savehi. These are all 1st year plants for me, and some I just recent started as cuttings from UC Davis. All except Angel Red were selected for reputation of being some of the most cold-hardy. Some people have good luck with the commonly available "Wonderful" here but I did not and they froze out. Wonderful does pretty good in the taste trials I have seen and is most likely the one you find in your local produce section. I am probably going to leave my Red Angel potted at least until I can start some cuttings from it as it is not particularly hardy I have heard, but is reportedly has a very soft seed and very juicy. Jujube: Li, Sherwood These are 2 of the more readily available cultivars and my 1st year with them. I have recently read Sherwood will not fruit well in our humid climate, but it came out of Louisiana so maybe it will turn out alright. I believe I read that in a NAFEX thread and it suggested Tigertooth for the humid southeast. In a couple years I am going to try and graft on some other cultivars. Honey Jar seems always to get great taste reviews and one I will try for sure.

Hi I notice you are from Virginia. I highly recommend you check 'Edible Landscaping' nursery which is located at Charlottsville area. We bought a few fruit trees from them last fall and they all do very well.
We got 2 persimmons (fuyu and Saijo), jujube (Lang, very handsome tree. we should also have bought a Li), 2 chestnut, and a cold-hardy orange tree (probably won't be able to eat the orange but the tree looks beautiful).

The fuyu already set fruits, while the other one from an expensive nursery hasn't even leaved out (probably lost that one).

Jujube, the problem is more what's available. Unless you can get some from a grower, you will probably have to go with Li and Lang. I have them both and like them both, but Li is the better of the 2. You will do better if you have at least one of each for pollination.
Just a note on pollination of jujube. I've never seen a bee work my jujubes. I have seen as many as 5 different kinds of wasp type insects working them all at the same time! They were all very content to leave me alone and just work the flowers.
