How to select the perfect outdoor lights? I'm driving myself crazy!

All the tips for lighting the front of house, mention 1/3 - 1/4 the size of your door(s). The average height of a front door/garage door is like 7 feet. So, a 1/3 of that would be 28 inches and a fourth would be 21 inches. So, how come when I look at light fixtures the majority seem under 15 inches? The ones that are in the 20 inches - many of them have these ornate metal or whatever material pieces curling around that would be great for a Victorian home but not for my ordinary 1990's house build in the burbs.

Yes, the brass lights don't go...but I'm having such a hard time with the size...I'm probably overthinking it but what can I say I teach math and I'm a clean freak.

How is a person supposed to pick nice lights when it seems the bulk of lights for sale are contrary to what is recommended?
