Pixelated Artwork Inspires a Picture-Perfect Dining Room
See how glass mosaic art influences a designer’s color, fabric and lighting selections for this New York dining room
Before designer Barbara Feinstein selected any furniture or decided upon a color palette for this dining room makeover in Irvington, New York, she took her clients to an art gallery to select pieces for the space. “They fell in love with this pixellated glass mosaic depicting a woman in sunglasses,” Feinstein says. “From there we had our inspiration for the rest of the room.”
The sculptural dining table consists of an elongated octagonal top made out of dark stained wood and a pair of chunky legs painted in a distressed white. The wood-frame dining chairs are covered in a mix of pixellated fabric, blue leather and brass nailheads. “I designed the chair fabric and had them custom made. The pattern on each is chair is purposefully different from one another,” Feinstein says.
A stunning crystal-and-brass chandelier provides a nod to Art Deco style, which works well for the traditional bones of the house, which was built in the late 1930s.
Both the walls and the ceiling are covered in cream-tone wallpaper. The paper on the walls features a subtle pattern that gives the illusion of texture, and the ceiling wallpaper includes faint glass beads that were selected to complement the glass mosaic artwork.

This close-up of the light green curtains shows off the beautiful embroidered edge with a botanical-inspired pattern. The curtains are 100 percent wool. “All of the colors and patterns in the dining room were selected to be energetic and fun,” Feinstein says.
The piece of art over the existing fireplace is entitled Decale and is by Bruno Mondot. Feinstein says the surrealist piece was selected to complement the framed glass mosaic on the other side of the room. “I like art pieces in the same room to speak to each other and share a common language,” she says.

The piece, entitled Window in the Sky and by Isabelle Scheltjens, is composed of a mosaic of colored glass pieces. “The homeowners wanted to keep the bones of the room traditional but wanted artwork, fabric and colors that felt more youthful and contemporary,” Feinstein says.
The designer used shades of light green and watery blue similar to those in the framed glass mosaic for selections throughout the room, including pleated window curtains, a custom blue-and-green striped area rug and pixellated fabric for the dining chairs.
