What garden/gardener inspires your design in your garden?
Comments (16)So many interesting websites, to get inspired by, these days. I loved the Oudolf site as well. I wish I had room to put in a truly huge mass planting, and still be the plant collector I find myself to be. Maybe some day I`ll be able to do that. In the meantime, it is wonderful to live vicariously through others and their gardens. I agree, Gottagarden`s gardens are inspiring. The red garden she posted in 06 has always been a favourite of mine. I wish I had the space. Hmmm, I say that a lot. :) I just bought hot Papaya Echinacea and love it. I`m sure she`d approve. :) Gottagarden`s picasa site Yeona Here is a link that might be useful: Gottagarden`s red garden...See MoreKitchen remodel planning... overwhelmed by first steps!
Comments (11)Back to the question about the "designers" at IKEA, HD, etc.: The folks who work at these places are a mixed bag and unlikely to be trained kitchen designers. There are exceptions, but generally expect to find people who learned what they know on the job at the store. Some kitchen and bath places have "real" designers. IKEA has free software you can download to help you design your space, but you have to know stuff like needing a landing space on both sides of your stove, and what to do with your two inside corners. (Maybe when you get rid of that wall you won't have 2 inside corners.) You could luck out - one of the members here works for a Big Box and is a "real" designer. Our guy at HD was great, but we were working with a plan that didn't have the big kinds of changes you're needing. Not to hurt your feelings or anything, but your current layout is less than wonderful. So, a couple of suggestions. Think about your time and your finances. If you have time, you can do a great design job using the resources on this board; people are so generous about helping you figure out how to use your space to it's best potential, it's fantastic. This is time consuming as you'll do a lot of measuring, re-measuring, drawing it out, thinking it through, but, in the end, it's very satisfying. If you don't have the time, then you probably need a real KD. There are several threads on how to find one. This will cost you money. Even if you end up hiring a KD, you can always come bounce ideas around here. There was a thread just the other day asking about peoples' 3 favorite parts of their remodeled kitchens. That was interesting. And don't forget to read the post that is always at the top of the first page of this blog. There is a link to the Sweeby test, among other things, and that's always a good place to start. P.S. You haven't started to soon on the planning. This will give you a good amount of time to get all your plans in order before summer. I've found that you just can't hurry the planning stages if you want a happy outcome. P.P.S. Painting those bricks to match the walls was a brilliant idea!...See MoreCanadian vs. American design aesthetics
Comments (8)If you're talking about the Canadian aesthetic that's been in the grind of deco media starting several years ago up to just a minute ago, it all looks the same to me. If someone were to say to me they prefer the Canadian design aesthetic, one *kind* of design imagery would immediately pop in my head. Candice Olsen, Sarah Richardson, Linda Reeves -- they all do basically the same thing and have the same look IMO. So much so that they might as well all be one entity as far as I'm concerned. You can throw Debbie Travis in there too -- fundamentally, not a lot of diff from the others, she just paints all the stuff she can get her hands on really bright colors. It's a cookie-cutter aesthetic. If someone were to say to me they preferred American design over Canadian, a zillion very different images pop into my head: Jamie Drake's "New American Glamour", Kelly Wearstler's "Maximalism", Mario Buatta "The Prince of Chintz" opposite Steven Gambrel's use of solid colors, or Miles Redd's "Enduring Style", or Bunny Williams' she-needs-to-have-a-garage-sale-it's-too-darned-cluttered-for-my-taste-look. All those images flood my head at once with the words American design aesthetics. All the important Canadian designers I can think of matter in a lame 'HGTV important' way. It's not inspired design like my very short list of important American designers. It's likely the issues I'm bringing up are due to my own ignorance and maybe Canadian design aesthetic really isn't as one-note as I perceive it....See MoreDifferent appliance brands in one kitchen OK esthetically?
Comments (50)cpartist, I just finished looking at your condo on the other thread. Stunning! Your new house plans look and sound amazing too! All of you have certainly convinced me that the guy whose comment started this whole thing is the silly one, not I for looking at appliances from a workability standpoint. Shelayne, speaking of functionality, how do you like your microwave/speed oven? I've rather tentatively decided on a micro/steam oven because I steam veggies nearly every day, but I looked at some micro/speed and was curious as to how the speed oven works? Fori, you make a good point. Not all harvest golds were the same, nor were all avocado greens. Now, unless you can get something really speciality or retro, you're basically choosing amongst black, white, and SS; sometimes bisque. beachem, yes! Craigslist is my friend. I almost never buy anything at full retail price. Everything goes on sale if you're patient. But "gently used" is great, and there are some good deals to be found on Craigslist. Rebunky, you're not so bad yourself! :-) I really appreciate how you and everyone here have been so nice and have taken an interest in my little project. As for the Maytag...don't get me started, lol!...See MoreIndigo Rose
