Organizing my pantry
Comments (6)Hello Marie26, OH Ugh. The pantry. We have a small walk in pantry. I have not measured it. It has 5 L shape shelves. I bought wire racks at Wal-Mart to make some of the shelves hold more layers without having to stack can on can and have them all fall on the floor. I was thinking about the pantry today. I think it will forever be a work in progress because of the ever changing items going into it. We live in the mountains and shop every couple of weeks weather permitting. When things are on sale we stock up so sometimes I have two boxes of cake mix and sometimes 6 boxes. So the places for things have to be flexible for us. I try to keep the soups together on the shelves and arranged by kind when possible and so on for the other canned things. Then the boxed things together mostly because they fit together better that way. My husband does the shopping so he likes to be able to look into the pantry to see what we might be low on and I might have forgotten to put on the list. :^( I repackage my spaghetti noodles because I have the perfect can for them and a big package fills it. I put my rice, beans and macaroni noodles in large plastic containers with a handle on them and the rest of the noodle kind of packages I put in a small laundry basket because they do not stack well. Like you potatoes and onions go in baskets on the floor. Small appliances on the lowest shelf. I keep my cook books in a deep kitchen drawer on end so I can see which one it is and not have to dig for them. I weeded out tons of recipes. If I had not used it in a year I tossed it. Books included but I donated them. By leaving the spaces on the pantry shelves when something is used up it helps to be able to refill the spot when we get home from shopping. There must be a better way I just have not figured it out yet. I know your frustration it crosses my mind a lot on how to fix it. And thank you for your nice comments on my kitchen redo.:^)) Chris...See MoreOrganizing the Pantry/cupboards
Comments (9)Ok, the "old house, no closet syndrome." I haven't done that one for many years, but did it frequently when I was younger. Can you think up? We always had shelving going over the door jams and on around at least two walls. My mom kept her collections of glassware up there, but it could certainly be used for other things. As long as the supports were put into the studs, it should hold quite a bit of weight. Mom used decorative supports and they were really attractive. When we lived in the older homes, we had rooms which had room for additional furniture for storage. It doesn't sound like you have that extra space. I would probably give in to frustration and change how I am trying to live in the space. When I had very few cabinets, I would only buy the groceries needed for the week. Most of it went in the fridge, it seems. Sometimes it's easier to change what you are doing than try and get the space to work as you hope. Post us a pic if you can. Comments (16)Thanks for your feedback, Angela. Glad you think the design will work. I agree with you about having the 5 inch side closer to the opening. That is the way we had it the first time, so that was my first instinct too. However, we switched it so that the message/calendar niche could be on the wider side and near the pantry door (pantry door will have cork board on the back side it for notices) and beside the white board on the dumb waiter door. I figure from standing at the message centre niche, I have access to the phone, pens, calendar, cork board with notices and the message board on the dumb waiter door. Seating at my island is right behind me for longer conversations. The broom closet pull-out is awkward. I did not realize that the pullouts were expensive. We have that awkward space at the end because where the dumb waiter is positioned is not able to be altered to allow a wider broom cabinet. The space available is only 6-7 inches wide. I could do a 1 foot deep door and sort of put the brooms in on an angle. Would that be better than the pullout? What other options would we have for this narrow deep space? The dumb waiter, BTW, will be for bringing up groceries (our garage is in basement level), taking down trash, bringing food/dishes to and fro the rec room downstairs (there is a small kitchenette there). The dumb waiter starts in the mudroom (first room from garage) and goes to kitchen. I am really looking forward to having this feature. Thanks for linking fishes' kitchen. It is loaded with cool features!! Thanks again. Carol...See MoreNeed help organizing small apartment!
Comments (6)Your kitchen looks to be quite small with minimal storage space. If it were me, I'd look for a shallow cabinet or hutch with a couple open shelves as well as some nice closed storage space. Something that ideally would fit on the wall just outside your kitchen. I'd store kitchen pieces that I don't use every day in it, keeping the open shelves for art, a tv, music, pottery or other pieces that look best in your living room. I've seen old Hoovers similar to this (but without a sink and not as wide). If need be, you could paint it to work with your furniture. Turn the upper part into a bar/art display or whatever. Storing plates, serveware, pots, pans, flatware, bowls, etc. in the closed portions. I see this kind of cabinet a lot in consignment shops for fairly cheap. I might even frost the glass to give myself more places to store kitchen, work-related or really anything you need to store and have no room for elsewhere. Again, you could use open display areas for a bar , art, etc. so that to visitors, it would look kind . It would be even better if it had a pull-out desk top feature. I'd paint it black, perhaps. Here's another idea, but I'm thinking much smaller and moveable. Sorry, I'm searching for examples fast, but hopefully, you get the idea: Bottom line is something that will serve multiple purposes, including storage and display. Look at flea markets and consignment shops. And remember, just about any piece of furniture can be painted....See Morelazy_gardens
