To Tile or To Wood Dilemna

Dianne
We are building a house and selected the extended breakfast nook area to have a formal dining kitchen combination (using that space as our formal dining room).

Hardwood floors will be throughout the house specially the family room that will open up to the breakfast area (archway instead of wall between rooms). We would place an extra large formal dining table horizontally in the breakfast area.

Dilemma:
1. Should we do hard wood in the kitchen and extended area to keep the "flow" and formal look?

2. Or should we tile the kitchen and extended kitchen/dining area for long term wear and tear 1 -- if so suggestions on time color? Tiling would be along the designated room separation lines (gray area in photo). Then family room would be wood.

3. Or, figure out another line of separation, perhaps at the end of the island.. and tile only from the stove to the island, then everything else is hard wood?

Your advice is much appreciated!!
