Wood Kitchen With a Rustic Feel and Modern Appeal
Custom cabinets and subtly patterned terra-cotta backsplash tiles are part of a new kitchen with old-world warmth
The owners also customized the size of their drawers and included specialized cabinets such as the knife block and spice pullout shown to the left of the range in this photo. The cabinet shop was even able to match the slotting to the size of the knives.
Backsplash: Handmade terra-cotta tiles in a pale, subtle color add “a little bit of rustic and old-world” feel to the kitchen, Keifer says. Graphic tile backsplashes have been popping up frequently in kitchens on Houzz lately. Keifer advocated for soft colors to give the tiles more staying power and avoid a trendy look. The homeowners handpicked the custom colors.

Countertops: The countertops are Calacatta Gold marble, which could get scratched or marred as it’s a more porous choice than something like quartzite. But the homeowners are OK with the kitchen looking a bit worn-in a few years from now, “like a French bakery,” Keifer says.
Island: The island is topped with the same marble as the perimeter counter, plus a bonus inset feature: a two-and-a-half-inch thick walnut butcher block for chopping. The style of island cabinetry is European frameless construction with a channel pull, meaning slab-front drawers with gaps for finger space to pull the drawers out. Slab drawers give the kitchen a contemporary feel, while the inset Shaker style on the perimeter lends the space traditional roots. The “X” on the end of the cabinet was a custom element the homeowners knew they wanted, and it echoes the barn-like look of the home’s exterior.
Pendants: The wife wanted “something rustic but also with some elegance,” Keifer says. A champagne-colored, transparent mirrored finish struck the right note.
Range hood: The hood is a custom piece from a local custom metal fabricator.

Open shelving: On either side of the window, the homeowners installed three-inch-tall, solid floating shelves with puck lights embedded inside. The wiring for the lighting is completely hidden, and Olivas says this type of light works nicely to highlight decorative elements. “When you have a puck light, it creates more of a spotlight effect,” Olivas says. By contrast, the bottoms of the few upper cabinets in the room have strip lighting, which Olivas prefers for task lighting.
Butler’s pantry: This photo shows the butler’s pantry, which Keifer set up as a coffee station. The top left drawer has a docking station where the homeowners can charge their tablets or phones. The station also includes a steam and convection oven.

Location: Boulder, Colorado
Size: 170 square feet (15.8 square meters)
Design team: Kristin Keifer of Kristin Keifer Design and Matt Olivas of The Artisan Shop
The backstory: In this kitchen, part of a new build, empty nesters used an interior designer and cabinet designer to customize their space. They were seeking a clean, warm kitchen that didn’t follow any particular trend.
Cabinets: Matt Olivas of The Artisan Shop designed cabinetry that would give the kitchen “a rustic feel but has a modern appeal,” Olivas says. The cabinets are inset construction, with the doors and drawers wrapped by the cabinetry frame. The drawers are simple slab fronts, while the upper doors are Shaker style. “They went with a Shaker door with upgraded larger stiles and rails to create a little more high-end appeal,” Olivas notes. The homeowners prefer having drawers throughout much of their kitchen, rather than upright cabinets with rollouts, for easier access and efficient use of space.
