Tatiana's 2011 Tomato List and Selected Varieties
Comments (41)Susan, I started doing square foot gardening in the mid-1990s and it works really well for some things and not as well for others that get really large in our climate. My spacing that I use now is sort of a hybrid of spacing from Square Foot Gardening and from John Jeavons' "How to Grow More Vegetables....." book, which has a complete title about as long as the distance between Marietta and OKC. I've just experimented with the spacing until I find out which one gives me the best yields. I think Square Foot Gardening would be great for you, but encourage you to think of it as Cubed Foot Gardening and grow as many plants upright on trellises, cages or arbors as you can and you'll get even higher yields per square foot. With smaller plants like lettuce, onions, carrots, etc., the standard Square Foot Gardening spacing works fine. With larger plants that turn into monsters in our climate, like Indeterminate tomatoes, squash, etc., I go more with John Jeavons' spacing or space my plants even further apart. With peppers, it generally varies, depending on whether a given variety gets 2' tall or 4' tall or taller. I have found most peppers give a really high yield even with close spacing, and so do many determinate tomatoes. I see Lunas most years in April, but not every single year. I usually don't see them in a bad fire year, but I'm not sure if that's because they aren't "here" or if I am just gone so much during a bad fire season that I miss seeing them when they are here. At our house, I almost always see them either on the ground in the area under the big security light that lights up the garage/parking area or hanging around outside the plant shelf window. When I see them at the fire station, it usually is early in the day and they're normally lying on the ground near the security light that illuminates the front of the station. I've never seen the larvae, but we have acres and acres of woods so they could be anywhere. We have tons of native pecans and hickories scattered all over our property (and on the surrounding acreage as well) so I guess that explains why we see them pretty regularly here. When I was a kid, they'd hang out on the front porch, usually on the screen door, when we were playing in the yard in the evening. It seems like we saw them a lot more often back then than we see them now. We have every kind of wildlife you can imagine here (as you well know) and most of it is a pleasure to have around. Seeing the lunas, because of their relative rarity, is a real thrill. Dawn...See MoreNEW: Seed Purge Fall 2013
Comments (150)Posted by poisondartfrog 7a (My Page) on Thu, Oct 17, 13 at 7:37 I agree, Meta Givens is the absolute best! Totally,...and another thing, we have the movie "Superman Returns" starring Brandon Routh, with Eva Marie Saint as Martha Kent. At the start of the flick, when Supes "returns" from space after having been gone for 5 years, searching hopefully for possible survivors of his home planet's untimely demise, his crystalline spacecraft comes streaking in over the Kent farm, causing quake-like tremors before it crashes in a field. --"Yo, Cryptid, get to the freakin' point already!"-- Anyway, as the camera pans around Martha Kent's dining and kitchen area, clearly visible, next to her radio, are Meta Givens' volumes of her "Modern Encyclopedia of Cooking." - Signifying what? Nothing, really, just something I picked-up on is all. :) - One of Roy's super fave movies that he likes to watch over, and over, and over, and over, and over,...--sigh-- This post was edited by cryptid on Fri, Oct 25, 13 at 0:04...See MoreHome Siting Issues: Deciding where on a lot to put a house
Comments (20)amberm, we faced the same rules regarding facing our home to a side street-must face it to the address street. fortunately our plan was equally suited to facing to the address street. we live about as far south as you can get in southeast texas, so facing the house at an angle to the street which also happened to be due north was a good thing. the house has 12 ft wide back porch which faces south and southeast, garage is to the west, shading the west side of the house. 10 ft wide front porch extends almost the width of the house facing a lake the great room is almost all windows towards the south, but covered by the screened porch so heat gain is not bad (solar screens were installed on the wrap porch today and i was so happy to see they hardly cut down on the light in the house at all) porch overlooks 25 large live oaks and looking under them - while seated on the back porch, you see only rolling fields as far as you can see master bedroom and bath have windows to the south and east so we have nice morning sunlight also one of my favorite things prevailing southeasterly breezes so sitting on the back porch is wonderful we chose our plans almost 18 years ago and were so happy to find a site so suited to them (didn't purchase them until after we bought the land)...See MoreHelp with DIY plan for 50 yr old tiny kitchen
Comments (44)Love that hidden chest freezer. I will look into that. It might fit under the peninsula or I could build a wood frame around it by the window and put a piece of counter hinged on top. It would just look like a matching cabinet. Coat hooks will be good for the living room side, but on the kitchen side, I think I can squeeze in an upper. Becky, sorry I missed your comments above with the link to L. Liess's old kitchen. I remember when she did that. I think I had an avocado green one at the time and was tempted. Boy she's come a long way. I will look at IKEA's pantries. I was just at our local Habitat and they had a perfect one with beautiful pull out shelves, but it was super heavy and it seemed a bit early to commit. Ispo, I'm not sure what you mean by "a workstation sink of around 42" for a large portion of the budget. That way you can move the ". . . water, stone, fire" functions to one spot". I thought we had water, stone, fire (ice is a bit out of the loop, but we can live with that). Could you draw a diagram? We've looked at many, many options to try to get around replacing the wood panelling, but I think it is just time to bite the bullet and do it. The new cabs will definitely not be new. I'm pretty good at finding bargain cabs - just wish I had a truck to haul them in :)...See MoreEd(Edwina) and Stephen Ci
