Any advice on how to plant/arrange Colorado Blue Spruce please?
Comments (18)I'd be a happy girl if my trees came out looking anything like that (on a smaller scale, of course!) I've ordered 30 Norway Spruce, 20 Colorado Spruce and one Crabapple to help with the kitchen window situation. I changed the plan a little, and will now be doing a large "L" of trees along the north and west sides of the lot, instead of just the north side. I am going to keep looking for a third variety that the road salt won't kill, but with just these 2 kinds, would you mix them up somehow or put all the Norways on the outside, or all the CBS on the outside? I have never planted anything more than one of those Christmas "plant in a box" things and really appreciate all the tips. Thanks!...See MoreDwarf Colorado Blue Spruce
Comments (14)'Sester Dwarf' With one-fourth the growth rate of its big brother this would probably fit your confines. At the very manimun 6 inches a year. This one about 12 years old. Main leader grew 6 inches while side branch growth limited to 4 inches this year. 5 ft tall. Growth rate variances will depend upon soil, micro climate, sun and adequate water. Only maximum growth will occur if all the above needs fall within the plants average needs. Dave...See MoreProblem with Colorado blue spruce
Comments (46)I have never posted, but thanks for the answer. I bought the tree in December 2011 and covered the pot with bags I had of mulch. When summer arrived, I had to go away for a month so it never got planted until July. My husband added 2 gallons of water everyday until I came home to plant it. I don't like anyone in my flower beds, but me. I will look for another small tree to plant in front of it. I did plant the ball last year with some Myke. I hope that helped it. My ground is very damp. I put my hands down there last week when it was very warm here in Ottawa. The nursery who sold me the tree, said to leave at least 2-3 inches of the crown out of the ground. Otherwise I cannot get air to the roots. I am new at this, so I am looking for some experienced people who can help me. Thanks for the info....See MoreColorado Blue Spruce advice for pre and post christmas
Comments (8)i find it hard to believe that you cant find someone in the neighborhood that doesn't have a hundred of them at the curb ... but maybe CO is different than here .... regardless... the idea is simply to cover the pot.. so sunshine cant warm it .... as far as i am concerned.. cold is not an issue ... the issue is repeated thawing during the day .. and re-freezing at night .... over and over again all winter long ... here in MI.. we are famous for 3 to 5 days of 60 degree weather in February .... a black pot in the sun during such time.. could hit 80 i bet ... and be back to 20 at night ... that sure doesn't sound good for roots to me ... the pot should never dry out ... but should never have enough water to turn into an ice cube .... i don't know what more to tell you ... here in MI.. with 40's the norm .. the pots just aren't drying out that fast ... insert finger and water if dry ... avoid over watering ... are the pots 12 inches??? .... if higher.. just mound some soil to hide the pot .... another alternative.. is to just put them on the north side of the house... to avoid all sun ... unless prevailing winds are howling on that side ... there are so many ways to avoid thawing of the pot.. i am sure you can figure out alternatives ... and that it will be there consistently all winter???? good luck ken PS: 2 feet of snow.. makes all protection issues just about moot ... but can we be sure you will get snow cover???? .. and that it will stay there all winter .... PPS: a few bails of straw .... bunch the plants together.. and put the straw around them ... bales intact ..... instant wind/sun break on the pots.. so many options .......See MoreEmbothrium
