1930s cast iron tub has no tiling flange... how can I tile the walls?

We're remodeling a 1930s Sears kit house. The cast iron tub is in great shape and I'd planned to keep it and tile the walls. However, on demolition of existing walls I see the tub edges are simply horizontal... no flange at all. I understand these tubs were probably made just for bating, before showers were common. But this house will be a rental and even though there will be a walk-in shower upstairs, someone will probably shower in it.

Is there a trick for tiling around these tubs to make the walls waterproof? I read about aftermarket flanges but also read that those are junk and often fail. Help!
