Tile Creates an Artistic Focal Point in This Serene Bathroom
A neutral color palette, sculptural tub and wall of curving tile set the tone in this California bathroom
The new walk-in shower’s feature wall tile is a custom blend of glass, stone and marble in a cream and taupe color palette. “The pattern emulates movement and reminds the homeowners of the ocean waves,” Smetana says. “It has an organic feel and functions like a piece of artwork. Everything else in the bath is understated.”

The walls were painted in Benjamin Moore’s Pismo Dunes. The floor is porcelain tile. Caesarstone in Dreamy Marfil was used for the shower pony wall, the shower threshold and the cabinet tops. “Everything is a monochrome palette of taupe, grays and cream, to keep the feeling spa-like and serene,” Smetana says. The window overlooks a natural preserve in the back “so there aren’t any worries about privacy.”
The satin nickel light fixtures are sleek and modern. The mirrors have natural wood frames. A Lucite stool sits in front of the vanity and “adds a nice modern touch,” Smetana says.
The new wood cabinetry has recessed fronts and was painted with a slight glaze to highlight its detailing. All of the materials were selected for easy maintenance, Smetana adds.

A confining layout, with a built-in tub, tight shower and glass block accents, convinced these homeowners it was time to remodel their master bathroom. Removing walls, opening up the floor plan and installing a modern freestanding tub and a new shower were among designer Cindy Smetana’s first steps. The undulating ceramic tile that runs like rivulets down one full wall in the shower dictated the room’s color palette and became the artistic focal point.
