Flooring Design Dilemma living room

Entryway to Great Room Flooring Dilemma

I'm in the process of purchasing this home and need some advice on what to do about the flooring. In the entryway is skinny wood flooring that ends at the entrance of the great room where the green carpet begins (no wood flooring underneath). I would like to keep the entryway flooring, but I'm not sure what flooring to use that could transition into the great room and compliment the entryway flooring.

1. Is skinny wood flooring easy to find?

2. How would wider plank wood flooring look up against the skinny wood flooring?

3. Would the floors have to be the same color?

Any help, suggestions and advice is greatly appreciated - thanks!

Congrats on your new home. Looks like it has great potential.

Any wood flooring you like and want to put in the living room will work -- turn it at a right angle to the boards in the hallway. Matching the finish -- shade even if not same wood -- on that built in china cabinet and closet doors would be well worth considering or go lighter -- in between that wood finish and the hall flooring. Width could be wider and it not hurt the look at all.

From the photo it looks like your flooring is a typical size. I have the very narrow 1.75 inches and that can be found at wood floor suppliers. I could be wrong, but yours looks to be 2.75 inches which can be found most anywhere.

I agree with suezbell with matching finish and just turning the new floor perpendicular.

constantinople, I can't wait to see your 7 inch birch floors which sound like they will be beautiful! I was thinking of going with Mirage Birch Engineered Wood floors but the cost was more than the BR-111 Brazilian Cherry so that is what I went with. I also loved the maple but felt the birch wood added more depth. I was bored of oak and wanted something different. I also never liked knots so was looking for a wood with minimal knots and not too busy of a grain. I was suprised how much grain Brazilian Cherry has in the 5" wide plank compared to how little I saw in the 3.25" wide plank.

So I would go with the first layout. Expand the wall so that it lines up with garage. Then consider doing bookcases with piano centered and tv above. The tv would only be slightly above eye level. Or option two but instead of fireplace in center that would be tv and piano would go on one side and chest on other. Or as shown but tv on one side piano on the other. By expanding the wall out, you will have room for built-ins and not sacrifice any more floor space.

kaydeen, I think it might be easier if you just hand-draw the current layout and give measurements. Include windows, doors, wood burning fireplace, etc. Include the rest of the house. Here's the problem: #1 - how to create a tiled entryway including storage for boots and coats (location:Canada). I'm in Canada too. Which Canada are you in, the western damp and not very cold Canada? The western very cold but it's a dry cold Canada? The eastern it's cold and also very very snowy Canada? How many coats? How many pairs of boots? Is there a chance that at some point in the (not so) near future, you might be a not-so-young couple with kids? How many guests do you host at a time? #2 - I don't know how to divide the space into Living room and dining room. What do you do in your living room? Entertain, read books, do puzzles, gaming? How many people maximum? How many people in the dining room? Do you like to entertain? If so, how many people usually? Do you have existing dining room furniture you have/want to use? Again, is there a chance that at some point in the (not so) near future, you might be a not-so-young couple with kids? Willing to blow out walls to create open concept and kitchen peninsula. Open concept what? Kitchen? Dining room? Living room? All of the above? The awkward coat closet at the front door is divided into 3 mini closets (1st for coats/2nd opens into guest room/3rd is small linen closet). Awkward or not, do you want it to stay or go? What's your budget? Do you actually own this?

I'd do the same type of flooring and have it all stained a bit darker. you could also break up the transition (if you want something different) by doing some slate tile, like in this pic. Notice the front door on this one. you have a cool entryway,,,I'd get a cool mcm type of door

btw,,you can find doors like below, on craigslist from people redoing theirs. paint it a cool color

when you take out that carpet, if you're on a slab, look into staining and polishing the concrete.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'm glad I wasn't off with considering the wider planks and staining it all the same color like walnut or oak. Behind the closet doors is a wet bar and plan on removing the doors and the updating the sink and countertop. The house is on a slab and have talked about staining it, but I think it might feel sterile and cold. My current home has all slate flooring so I'd like to change it up and not incorporate any slate. Beth, so funny that you mentioned the door and wallpaper, cause on the list of must do along with the flooring is a new front door, change lighting fixtures, and removing the grasscloth wallpaper! I also MCM and hope to incorporate the style into this home.

If anyone finds anymore pictures of different wood floors in the same area, please share! My search isn't turning up much.
