We're almost finished & I'm going nuts ... I need to commiserate!
Comments (11)It certainly can be done...the tile will take the longest, then the hardwoods, carpet takes no time. If your builder gets it all lined up right...ANYTHING can be done. One day, I was at the house and there were about 6 guys doing base and crown, 2 master carpenters doing the fireplace overmantle, panel jambs, wainscoting and all of the built ins in the closet, a guy working on installing the cabinets, and painters working on the exterior! It was crazy, there was a circular saw going in almost every room! BUT...like post above said, it may very well take a little longer. Just mentally prepare yourself. You are so close!! We are about 5 weeks out and while I can't wait to live in our new house...I start hyperventilating thinking about all we have to do between now and then. But it WILL get finished! When the going gets tough...focus on some aspect of your house that your love and think about that. There are things in our layout that would have been nice to change...but it is so much nicer and better suited to our family than our old house! I am focusing on all the positives. Best of luck to you! So exciting!...See MoreAlmost finished - quartersawn oak and Delicatus kitchen
Comments (25)The cabinet interiors are light (birch?) except for the glass uppers. Those are stained the same color as the exterior. It's much easier to see stuff in a light interior than a dark one - the plywood and particle board interiors in the old kitchen were really dark brown with age and stuff disappeared into the darkness. I really prefer the light interiors :). Our cabinets are frameless, but the edge fronts are stained the same as the cabinets. You don't see any of the lighter color until you actually open up the door/drawers....See MoreCan we brainstorm and save $100K on our remodel?
Comments (4)Alku: we intend on getting more bids, but between the cabinet bids(2) and construction bid (1) , it got me thinking in a less expensive direction! We will definitely pursue more bids and I think from what I have read here, we should be able to at least get the cabinet bids decreased in 1/2 if we shop around. That is really encouraging that your estimates on $/sq ft ranged that much. So hopefully we will find a happy middle ground somewhere.Thankyou! It just made me think, what can we do with what we have if we got more creative and tried to avoid an 'addition'. So will see what both options come up with! Remodelfla: the alcove has sliders at the north side and a window which goes almost to the floor but that can be changed. The sliders could be taken out. New sliders can't go on the FR wall -this backs up to the 'breakfast/dining room' which opens to a small porch -so access to patio could be via the porch or a single door possibly off the dining room on the east wall if needed. We no longer need the table in the kitchen since we have the dining room right there (previously our play room) BUT we would love an island for seating in the kitchen. SO that is the big ??? is , is this worth $100K+ to do an addition to accomodate an island OR can it be put in by simply redoing interior walls rather than exterior/addition? The idea of cabinetry in the alcove area is interesting as a start to all of this. I don't know if this will help or confuse things... this is the photo with the new addition. I drew in red lines to roughly indicate the current walls of our existing kitchen. But maybe this is easier to read then the above photo which I know isn't the best -its' hard to show the entire 1st floor without making it small....See MoreOur almost finished kitchen (w/ tile countertops!)....
Comments (47)Christine R we actually just recently did away with the tile. The tile held up just fine and would have easily lasted us another 10 years + but I was ready to do away with the grout lines. Also, to be perfectly honest the white shows EVERYTHING! It was a good "budget friendly" alternative until we could do granite. I am attaching a pic of our kitchen...7 years later :)...See MoreMissy Turcotte Guptill
