Comments (15)Hi alermar, The floor is a concrete overlay. I dont recommend it. I just had a contractor over today about some other work and I mentioned I will want to tile eventually. I was under the impression that I could just tile over the overlay, but he said no, it would need to be ground down first. The mess! The stools are comfortable, but the springs are not working great in one of them. They were incredibly cheap to purchase, like $65 each maybe? I had them in my prior house and didnt intend to keep them, but I thought the red added some pop. I hope you post pics of what you do in the kitchen so we can follow it! I'd love to see what you end up doing....See MoreVacation with teens - where to go, what to do?
Comments (67)The nothern Ca coast is perfect for a road trip, with many sights along the way. To make it easy on yourself, fly into the small Santa Barbara airport(if possible), and rent a car from there. Santa Barbara itself is a lovely, wonderful, bustling little village with plenty of shops, great food, the pier, and of course the magnificent beach! Oh, and USB is right on the ocean. You'll only be about an hour(a gorgeoous drive!)from San Simeon where Hearst Castle is located, but you would need to book your tours online beforehand~we dId two, one after the other, but don't recall which. I swear the views from the estate are a look into heaven! You will also be close to San Luis Obispo, a great little village with a ban of fast food chains. There's a tree~lined street you can't miss, which is reminiscent of a scene out of Gone With the Wind with the mighty Oaks and also the college with it's gorgeous grounds. I can't remember how far you will be from Solvang, but it's a short drive and well worth seeing this bit of Sweden-in-America! Monticeido and Summerland, are other small villages worthy of a bit of time, and close to each other. As an aside, i'm also somewhat of a 'food snob' and was happy to learn the majority of the small restaurants along the way have their own organic gardens and if not, the produce is bought locally from organic farmers/farmers markets. It's definitely a trip i'm planning to do again, and will take in Monterey and Carmel, possibly as far as San Fran/Sausilito. As for San Diego, I lived there for 27 years before moving to Austin, and it can get crazy on the freeways. Parking places at the beach are rare, restaurants can be a 2 hour wait, and if there's a baseball game, traffic can be at a standstill in every direction. The Del Mar Fair is in late June ending on July 4th, but two weeks later horse racing season starts~all this creates more traffic, etc in SD. Just a heads up, as it can become frustrating(and overwhelming!)and may be more than you bargained for. Just something to keep in mind if you plan a visit. Looking forward to your decision. You've been given some great ideas!...See MoreModest Vacation Home Plan Review
Comments (24)Chelwa, I really like the idea of the one wall galley. DH and I both like to cook and wanted plenty of counterspace, but I think we could still have that with the galley plan. You're right that it avoids the corner cabinet issues, it would also allow the stove to vent directly to the outside, and it would give us better use of the wall space if we go with the loft/ladder option. I'm going to work on that before going to the kitchen forum. Great idea, thank you. Still_waters, we have a similar laundry/mudroom setup now where we walk past the washer/ dryer and I'm fine with it but I do understand the issue - if the floor isn't clean you have to be careful taking your laundry out of the machines! For the back porch, we're in the south so keeping the back porch screened from insects is really needed, especially in a cove (mosquito heaven). I love sitting in the sun, in the winter with a cup of coffee, and will definitely find places for that. Door size: We actually have 28" doors on the bathrooms in the house we're in now, and it's the house we plan to age in! My fault entirely, it's a custom house and I was not thinking about aging in place at the time. For the lake house, as cpartist says from what I've read a wheelchair can access a 32" door if it is a straight approach (36" if you need to turn to enter). A straight approach could be done in the master bath in the lake house, and someone with a walker can access either bath....See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
