Need help decorating new room
We are renovating a room and getting near the end and I need help picking a rug, curtains, and toss pillows, etc
Any recommendations/suggestions are appreciated.
The floors are a traditional color hard wood
The furniture is a dark/chocolate brown leather
The wall color is edgecomb grey which is def more of a tan/beige than a grey
Any recommendations/suggestions/ pics are appreciated.

Comments (45)I read an article on this site not long ago (can't remember where now) that I thought gave some good advice. Buy a couple of high quality pieces. Really nice sofa and chair for example in a neutral color. Then accessorize and add color with less expensive pillows and smaller more original pieces from flea markets as others have suggested or even second hand stores. If you spend some time browsing photos on Houzz and start an idea book you will soon see the similarities in what you like or don't like. Even colors you gravitate towards. So you could get some nice pieces and ideas from Ethan Allen but don't buy everything from them. Fill in with less expensive and unique pieces. It will keep the room from looking like a showroom. Also once you pick fabrics or pillows you like paint stores (at least my local SW) is great about helping pick out paint colors. I think you could very well pull a room together based on an inspiration photo and help from furniture and paint stores. I am no whiz at decorating but I have learned a lot from reading these forums. We have finally settled on a new sofa, accent chairs and the place we are getting all of this from has agreed to also throw in a rug for us if I happen to like one from their suppliers. I fell in love with a rug they have as well as accent pillows I think will match well. We have also decided on the color of the accent chairs and the model of the sofa. My issue : I CANNOT decide on a sofa color!!! Everyone is telling me to do light grey but I am afraid it won't go with the rug I like. I am swayed towards a white sofa (it is more off white, I will post a picture of the swatch bellow) in order to flow with my chairs and everything else. I had spoken to the designer who did our plan and she said I can go with a white sofa no problem. Everyone is saying do light grey. I know I can pick another rug but I am SO In love with the one I have chosen and I think it will make the space... Can anyone advise me on what to do? I do like a light grey sofa but I also really like the colors in the rug...We have to order this week in order to make it in time for Christmas and I am very undecided. You have all been so helpful and if you aren't utterly sick of me, I would appreciate the advice! Comments (15)You have two nice features; the fireplace and the brick wall, plus a nice bit of light. Painting those dark blocks outside white will enhance the brightness and look cleaner overall. Then paint your walls that taupe/greige of the mortar on the brick wall. I think that color will work well with the fireplace too. Try two 3-seat sofas and two swivel chairs in a "U" in the middle of the room. The swivel chairs will close the bottom of the "U" and can turn to the fireplace or the piano. Be careful not to buy big puffy oversized seating. Your rug may work fine. Replace it last. I don't see any electrical outlets for lamps, but you need some. A chandelier on a dimmer will work for your ambient lighting, but you need task and accent lamps too. 6 years agoThe choices are endless for rugs. Don't even think about pillows etc, until you choose a rug. Some ideas:
It really depends on your tastes and style. These appeal to me with your space, but you may want something more colorful or graphic...

So lots of brown in the room. Starting to like the idea of adding at least some blue to the room. The room is right off the kitchen and we are looking for a casual cozy look. The living room on the other side of the house has a more "formal" look

I put this visual together the other day, but my settings were off, images were microscopic.. just had a chance to fix. Pictured here is your love seat and a taupe color on linen curtain.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoLight colored, solid pillows. against a backdrop of dark sofas/furnishings are, of course, used in design all the time.
Below is the exact image of light blue lumbar pillow I used in visual, and this is actually how pillow is presented on CB2 site - shown with a backdrop of very dark leather.
Aim is to sell pillows... so don't think the intent was to present pillow as a ''white hole.''

6 years agoI tend to lean more neutral too. The good thing is there are so many patterns and textures you can still go neutral and add some color elsewhere! The cowhides could look really good with the leather....

6 years agoi love the hares! Sorry, i meant light as in white, pale pink, etc. that blue, while fairly light is still more color saturated then many colors.
Neutral is great, do you have artwork? Most feel it is boring in a short period if you do not have other focuses of color, etc.
i got some great pillows go with it don't often get tu use, be fun dragging them out! ymmy. remember let me know so ican look up or toss.
