Do white kitchen cabinets need to match trim and moldings?
Comments (11)Thanks everybody for your input. The shaker cabinets are new -- so that's why I hesitate to paint them. True, the lighting in the kitchen isn't that great -- so perhaps it would be difficult for people to notice the difference. I would love, however, to change the hardware. Currently they are the tubular pulls which seem too contemporary for this pre-war apartment. I know I may have to paint the cabinets depending on the new hardware I select. If I can fill in the holes with wood filler and have it paint so it would be seamless, I'd leave it as it is. But not sure if that will happen. If I end up having to paint the cabinets, I figure might as well paint them the same color as the trim/moldings. Decorators White looks good in all of the rooms (with the exception of the master bedroom where colors are more muted) because the furniture tends to run on the fresh clean side....See MoreKitchen cabinets two different whites
Comments (19)Hi Andrea, thanks for your question! It turns out it was the lighting in my kitchen. I had them take the doors off and switch them. Exactly the same result occurred so yeah, don’t I feel sheepish? It’s almost two years since our reno and I can now say I don’t even notice the variation in shade. People who come into our house have never said anything either, lol. I really think when you are looking at something day in and day out, making decisions, revising those decisions and questioning those decisions you are overloaded and then everything starts looking wrong. That being said, if there is something genuinely wrong or not to your satisfaction, by all means - point it out and have it corrected. After all, it is your money. I’m genuinely thrilled with our new kitchen and I hope we never do one again!! Have a great day :) I think people get renovation burn out and by the end of ours I was really fed up. I decided that so what if our two faucets aren’t an exact match in metal? Both were described as brushed nickel, but they are ever so slightly different....See MoreWill I regret two tone white & walnut kitchen cabinets?
Comments (14)Hi edelweiss- I am not sure how the wood lowers and white uppers will look to you 10 years down the line when it isn't so in style. Have you thought about doing all the uppers and lowers the same wood, with maybe two uppers glass? You could frost the glass or even just put an inexpensive peel-on film over the glass if you don't want the contents easily visualized. Then you could paint the island whatever color you want. Either white, or even that red that you like. With two different color cabinetry, (on the periphery and the island) I would not have a different type of counter top on the island, unless it were to be butcher block. I would also not get a red range top. Your tastes may change and a range top is very expensive to replace. Or you may need replacement parts, and red may not be available. Or you may sell, and red is very taste specific, and that may be a deal breaker....See MoreHelp with white kitchen: cabinets, walls, trim in different whites?
Comments (10)@Gaby Buller Take a look at SW 7042 Shoji White, for the walls. You can definately do a beautiful white palette. Since all color has a DNA (Hue family, Value and Chroma), you can be guided by framework to create a palette that is harmonious and pleasing to your eye. When pairing whites, a good principle that works is having at minimum 0.2 difference in Chroma (last number) between your whites. A little spacing on the color wheel also helps. This principle ensures there is enough contrast between your whites so that one will look more neutral than the other, and they don't look dingy or dirty. The other way to add contrast is to change the sheen level. For example, you can play with sheen levels on BM White Dove and use it as the Trim Color, in a higher sheen than the cabinets and use BM White Dove in Matte on the walls. This will also provide the contrast your eye needs without looking dull. Other colors that may fit your vision and work with the above mentioned framework are: SW 7013 Ivory Lace SW 7010 White Duck SW 9586 White Sesame BM OC-13 Soft Chamois...See MoreJulie B
