Matching white kitchen cabinets with trim
Comments (2)This is just my humble opinion, but I don't think you have to match the trim to the cabinets. In our new kitchen I have white cabs that have the slightest hint of cream in them. Our walls are painted SW "Creamy" and the trim throughout the house is SW "Snowbound", which is the brightest of the 3 white shades in the room. I have upper cabinets close to my kitchen window trim, so I had similar concerns when we were in the planning stages, but I think it looks fine. To me, having all the whites match exactly brings to mind plastic or particle board. Different shades add depth and dimension to the wood surfaces, I think. The only thing I would advise is that you not use a brighter white paint on the walls beside/behind the cabinets (which I doubt was in your plan...)because that would make the cabinets appear dingy/yellowed....See MoreWhite Molding/Trim, but Off-White Cabinets...does this bother you
Comments (12)rdas, Have you thougt about lighting? In my kitchen the lighting effects the color of my paint. My cabinets are a shade or so warmer than the bright trim throughout the rest of my house. But, the lighting that comee in from the windows changes the color of the cabinets throughout the day. Slightly of course. And at night the glow from the undercab lighting and the accent lighting also has an effect. My paints appear so close they look like they match. Only I know because I ordered different paint colors. Can I see a difference up close? Not really and this may be because they are by the same paint manufacturer and truly just a shade appart. You will be in a different situation because my cabs are painted and yours are custom ordered. I can only imagine the stress you are under trying to match. I also have the factor of the The Tan Coat wall paint color draws the eye away from whites fighting with each other. Sorry there are pieces of trim missing in this pic. Still trying to finish the kitchen. I hope this can give you an idea that whatever you do choose will probably be closer than you realize. You have excellent taste and I know your kitchen will be amazing. ~boxerpups...See MoreDo White Cabinets and Trim Have to Match?
Comments (8)No rules, all personal choice. We have a similar-but-not situation in our kitchen right now---we actually did match our cabinets to the trim in the kitchen and throughout the house (the trim and ceilings in an old house with lots of built-ins were painted Acadia White by the old owner). So rather than try to find a different white, we just had the cabinets done in Acadia White too. But...our trim and doors are all in oil-based paint, and that's no longer available where we live, so the cabs and new trim are all in water-based, which doesn't yellow like oil-based does. In our kitchen, that meant our doors and windows were one shade and our cabinets and trim (which we replaced) were another shade. Though it's all officially the same color, the old paint is much creamier/yellower than the new paint, which is much whiter---probably similar to the effect you'd have. It did bug me in the beginning, but now I'm actually used to it and it looks normal. (We're eventually replacing the doors so didn't bother repainting them; the windows will stay mismatched since they're a PITA to repaint and current paint job is in good condition.) I think the key is consistency, though, as palimpsest said. As long as all the trim is the same color and all the cabinets are the same color, it's less critical that it be exactly the same color, I think---though personally I do prefer when it is....See MoreOff white Ikea kitchen cabinets and white crown molding?
