When my son left for Iraq, he left us a gift...
Comments (11)Thanks so much for all the congrats. Mary, I WILL be able to hold this one almost as much as my first, now that d-i-l & grandkids have moved closer to home. Even missing my son, I'm one happy Poo!!! Mark, last I looked, it still said only one change. I never give thought to special priveledges, but it may be in order. Thanks for the idea. And don't worry about the long name, it will be simply, "Grandmapoo". :) BTW, does everyone remember me telling you about Annjolee's arrival? Well, she just had her first birthday last week! Because they lived in Tenn, I missed out on a lot of her development, but not this one! Also, my son has arranged for leave for the baby's birth. :)...See MoreNeed magazine ideas for son's gift
Comments (11)If he's stumbling into vegetable gardening, "Commonsense Vegetable Gardening for the South" is my Bible for veggie gardening. Having grown up in Illinois and spending 10 years in Alaska, the timing of when to plant here in Texas was my biggest obstacle. You can grow various things year-round, you just need to know when to plant, and what varieties do well here. This book is great for that. When he gets good, then he can experiment! This book is out of print, but you can generally find them used on Amazon. The authors have a new one out called "The Southern Kitchen Garden," but I really like the old one better. Comments (5)A simple curtain rod with two or three full size sheets in a neutral color like beige or tan across the area will work. I have done this two different times. You will probably need more that one curtain rod so you can add extentions. a tension mounted one would work if it is between walls. hang it as high or low as you want, but highest is better looking. Sheets are longer and cheaper than curtains, but if you get them in the colors I suggested , they will look like curtains. Make sure you use enough to drape like curtains,so it doesn't look like a sheet is stretched across the area. measure length you will need, and hem the rest to make a rod pocket. I used tan sheets in a house that had windows too big for curtains. I used a rod that looked like iron and black curtain clips instead of using a rod pocket. No sewing what soever was required. When I sold the house the buyers insisted that I leave the curtains. If the your son's curtains will be opened and closed alot, the rod pocket would be best....See MoreGift Ideas Needed for an Author . . . My Cousin
Comments (21)FWIW, I actually think buying them dinner in their "town" is a bit awkward and certainly unnecessary. To me, one buys a meal for someone who visits them on their turf, partly really to say "I have a great place to share with you". One also might buy a meal for those who are struggling or lesser off, or junior in some way (young relatives, employees, etc). Or, if one were a houseguest and wanted to reciprocate; or if you golfed at their club. In the situation you describe, ostensibly you are going a little out of your way and giving up some resort time to spend with them. And, it is their turf. If anyone should pay for the group, it would be them IMHO. I'd be a bit surprised if they did not. All of this is to say that I think you have no need to do or give anything, even if you expect her to give you a book. (Which is a minor enough gift that it does not require reciprocation). But, if you did want to give something, I would make it small and personal and, unique to your area of the country. If it's small enough, it hardly matters what it is as long as you like it. When a recipient receives a small gift they really can't be burdened by not liking/needing it , etc. And IMHO you live in an area that is unusual and interesting to most; I think something "indigenous" to your area is a perfect. A small bowl or box? Or even a small frame....See Morelegomom23
