Madison's "Rock Star" birthday, with Hot Milk Cake
Yes, it's hard to believe. Madison is 6 and is far too "old" for Mickey Mouse or WonderWoman, she wanted a "Rock Star" birthday cake, and so she sat down with a paper and markers and designed her own. She was sure Grandma could make it. Oh, and she needed cupcakes too, with guitars and stars on the top because, well, Rock Star, duh.
It had to be pink and black, with some golden glitter. Shooting stars on top, glittery ones. Could we please find candy for the stars, so we can eat them? Chocolate would be good. Oh, and LOTS of frosting. Yeah...
So, here we are, the multi-layered, pink and black with shooting stars, Rock Star Birthday Cake, made with Pixistix' Hot Milk cake, one of my favorites. Yes, that's the birthday girl, also one of my favorites, LOL. Oh, and the cake was not lopsided, that was my camera. (grin)
Cupcakes? We have those too. The chocolate ones got frosted pink, with chocolate guitars and stars made with candy molds and melts. Yes, I made the decorations too, just because, well, have you ever tried to buy sugar guitar cake decorations? I used Colleen's chocolate cake recipe, but I overbaked the cupcakes just a few minutes too long, and they weren't as moist as I like them. The kids didn't seem to notice, somehow, especially after frosting and ice cream.
The strawberry cupcakes were not my favorite, I won't use that recipe again. They were frosted with white buttercream and pink candy decorations
The buttercream got a little beaten up in the 50 mile trip to Ashley's, but it wasn't bad and tasted far better than the fondant. I did use fondant for the shooting stars and the kids were busily eating those when I left, can't ever get enough sugar, you know.
We also had a menu of her choosing: Sloppy Joes, chips and pasta salad. Yes indeed, carbs, carbs and more carbs. Oh, there were also goldfish crackers, can't forget those!
Happy Birthday to Madison, my Small Princess and sous chef, minus those two bottom teeth.

Comments (73)I would like anything from a good bakery. My birthday sometimes falls on Thanksgiving and mostly just before or after. I have had my share of supermarket turkey shaped cakes and cakes with pilgrims. I used to ask for ice cream cakes as a kid because they at least had ice cream and usually weren't awful.....The worst was when I was 16. I wanted something grown up and beautiful. My sister talked my boyfriend and my parents into going to a amusement/arcade park for a surprise. The place was a castle themed park called Camelot. All the kids at my school called it "scam-a-lot" I was horrified. When the girl brought out the cake badly frosted and with day glow icing clowns and balloons I asked them to get it boxed and we went home to have ice cream instead. At least none of my friends saw it all. No I am not stealing this from the show Golden Girls. This actually happened to me! I had another cake disaster for my graduation. My sis and I got the freshest ingredients and made a cake from a cake bible cookbook from the library. I had spent a week prior making frosting roses for this masterpiece had saving them in the freezer. We made the cake and tasted the trimmed off parts it was fantastic! The next day we frosted it and that evening when the family tried it it was so dry no one wanted to eat it. After that I always ordered a cake from the European bakery I love in Pasadena. The other cake fail I was involved in was my cousin's wedding. She knew I could do frosting flowers well so she asked me to come over and decorate her wedding cake. She wanted me to use this lavender icing she made. I decorated the whole thing and we set it by the window. After an hour into the reception, the purple icing in the sunlight faded to blue and was melting a little. My part of the family was out drinking and laughing on the grass. My cousin's husband's family was inside being shocked at the drinking going on outside. The cake suddenly started to lean and lucky her husband's brother was sitting close by and grabbed for it. The top 2 tiers were saved but the lower ones crashed. She didn't put in any supports inside. But, great sport that she is, she just laughed and served her husband's family the upper layers and our family the toppled ones. We didn't mind a bit. She's a great gal and can laugh through anything. One of the weddings I can say I really enjoyed. Sliding color changing cake and all. Please no one get a bright colored cake for a birthday. At my granddad's 90th, my aunt ordered a NASA themed cake with dark blue icing. My Grandad worked in the space program after being in the air force during WWII. Everybody had a dark blue tongue and blue teeth. All these old people with blue lips and teeth! I love a simple cake with almond extract and some fresh ripe strawberries or peaches and whipped cream. I had a fantastic cake once made with 4 different pastel fruit flavored layers and also a very good Black Forest cake by a Belgian pastry chef who used to have a bakery in my city but has now retired. Comments (14)Well, the party was today, and Madison was one happy little whirling dervish, and her sister just ate cookies and was happy too. We also had ham sandwiches, salsa and chips, some fruit snacks and white chocolate covered pretzels. The cake was all eaten and the doll was dressed and appropriately welcomed into the "family". Sharon, I can't believe she's three either, and the Littlest Sister is a year old. She learned a new word today. "Olaf". That's the snowman from the movie, LOL, and she loves him. Madison was a good big sister and let Little Sis play with her presents too. Just wait. Before you know it you'll be all snuggled up with a grandchild, eating cookies and watching movies about Princesses or Pirates. You'll be amazing at it too, I know. Comments (15)Plllog, there are no holes in the bottoms of those carriers, the cupcakes sit high enough that you can just grab the top of the cupcake itself and lift it out. The rest of the carrier is a deep plastic bowl with a post in the middle and those carriers fit down over the dowel, three layers deep. The top snaps on and there is a handle, so you can carry 2 dozen cupcakes, stacked 3 deep, without crushing any. It's very handy, and I bought it on clearance last year after Christmas. arkansas girl, my daughter tells me that Madison had some friends over the next day to play and although the cake was all gone, they ate cupcakes, so they did get eaten, they were just second choice for the kids. Too much candy for me, I didn't eat either one, but I just thought it was odd that I was specifically told that people did not eat chocolate and then that's what they ate! Annie...See More
