Christmas Candy's Nutcrackers
Comments (12)Jane, Since I was gone so much during December, I just don't really feel I had time to enjoy my decorations, and now I can actually relax and enjoy everything. The big guys came from Big Lots (it might even have been Pic N Save then) it was so long aqo. I have added some rhinestones, glitter, sequins, and the fur around the hat of the white one to glam them up a bit. Karen, I will roundup the rest for a group shot. That storm sure was a bummer! We arrived in Sedona (actually the Village of Oak Creek) Monday evening and the weather was beautiful. We were taking care of some personal business on Tuesday and Wednesday, but did manage to play a few holes Tues. afternoon, and then Wednesday was rainy and cold. There was not that much snow in the village, but we couldn't leave on Thursday because the highways were closed from Sedona to Flagstaff, and from Flagstaff to Holbrook. I would have loved to drive down to see you, but don't have any personal contact info other than your email address and here. DH is not a fan of shopping unless he is looking for something, and he would not have been fun to be with on a shopping trip. I looked at my personal info here and I guess I set my account up so quickly, I don't have anything personal listed there and couldn't figure out how to add anything to it last night. : ( So, I guess it is not easy for anyone to contact me either. I know you have my email address, so if you want to send me any personal info to that email, I would have some information to get in touch with you for the future. Eventually, when we retire, we will spend time in the Village as snowbirds, and then return to Denver for the summer. So, in a couple of years, running down to see you from Sedona would be possible. Nana, I will definitely do a group shot for the rest. I love the sign also, and that is why it stays there permanently. Jeanne, I don't have that nutcracker. I love the sentiment you have added to your photo. I really felt kind of out of kilter being gone so much during Dec. and it made the holiday feel very rushed. I had Christmas with my family on Dec. 19, an Open House on Dec. 20, and Chritmas brunch on the 25th, and getting the decorations, food, and gifts ready for all of that was a mad dash. I know people would tell me to not do all that I do, but that is all part of the holiday for me, and I just couldn't let it go. So, now I am home am enjoying the calm. Comments (3)I can tell you what my aunt, who was locally famous for these (even appeared on TV with a marzipan making demo) used to do. She would make decorative tree centerpieces with them. Get a small Styrofoam cone from a craft store. Green is good if they have them: she would spray paint hers gold. Set in into a decorative base. You can use something you have around, like a small candy dish, or even a small new clay flowerpot. I think she adhered the cone to the base with floral adhesive. Maybe trimming the cone at the bottom to fit closely inside the base. Then just stick the small fruits in with toothpicks, arranging so the Styrofoam surfaced is completely covered. If there were gaps she would put in tiny craft store picks with silk leaves on them. It takes more fruit then you think to cover a cone, so dont buy a large one. The fruits that look best for this purpose are uniform sizes; like citrus fruits, apples, and pears. Not bananas or potatoes. Makes a very pretty centerpiece for Christmas. You can have your guests help themselves to the candy fruit after dinner, or keep it indefinitely. The fruit will dry out eventually and become very hard. You can also make a wreath or candle ring with a Styrofoam wreath form....See Moreclassy ladys surprise 50th birthday party ideas
Comments (4)Get a caterer! That is a LOT of people to cook for. You can do a few things yourself and ask the caterer to serve if you ask nicely. If a caterer isn't in the budget, at least order prepared food or platters to serve. Cooking for 80 at a hall is just too much. Hard to say what kind of food. I would pick what your mom loves best -- keeping in mind what your guests will enjoy, too. If she's a baseball fan, for example, have hot dogs and peanuts and beer. If she loves travel, have exotic choices. But I think really your best bet is to give the caterer a budget and let him/her suggest things. That always works for me. For decorations, flowers always say "special occasion," but they can be expensive. You can make copies of photos of her at different stages of life and put them in inexpensive lucite frames of different sizes (you may even be able to ask the store if you can return them if you keep them in perfect shape) and put a few on each table for centerpieces, perhaps with a single flower or candle. We did that for my mother's 70th and it worked nicely. Potted flowering plants with a ribbon around the pot are also nice and inexpensive centerpieces (and a lot less work). You can give them as thank you gifts to people who help you with the party. You are so nice to do this for your mother! Good for you. I am sure she will be thrilled....See MoreNo candy canes...just eye candy!
