What do you do about daylilies you don't like?
Comments (27)I bring them to work and give them to my co-workers. I do that with a lot of the extra divisions and seedling plants in the spring. This year I brought in 10 or so divisions of Siloam Doodlebug and 8 divisions of Snowy Eyes and a few of some others. I also bring in other plants, like Lady's mantle, iris, perennial geraniums and stuff. I hate composting perfectly good plants and I'm too lazy to sell them. Most of my co-workers are not die-hard gardeners like us and don't care about things like names and genetics - they're just happy to get a nice plant with neat flowers for free! I've been doing this for a few years and it's always fun to have people come back to me and rave over a plant I gave them a year or 2 ago....See MoreWhat do you like best about your new kitchen?
Comments (26)As Divamum noted- I am amazed at the change in quality of life for our whole family. We went from tiny horrible nasty 1920's kitchen (fridge blocked a doorway, no counter space, stove blocked doorway, no vent....) to a marvelous kitchen that has the perfect feel. We captured 1920's charm with modern convenience. The space is so functional now- so much counterspace that it doesn't matter if there's a mess, there's still plenty of room. There's better lighting, more room all over. Not to mention a Wolf range that is amazing and a nice new fridge (Thermador freedom). Nothing hides in the back, nothing freezes in the fridge. We have this marvelous invention that is called a "dishwasher". My whole adult life I'VE been the dishwasher... On top of the function, there is beautiful soapstone that goes without oiling for months, and a beautiful floor of checkered marmoleum. Most of all, the function and space have now set me free to cook with my kids and throw dinners together after a long day out at work. We did tons of holiday baking and used cookie cutters for the first time (never had a clean enough, roomy enough kitchen to take that sort of time and care). The sheer space and pleasantness make the kitchen a focus for lots of living and entertainment. I'll also note the little desk we worked in to the side corner allows my husband or I to work late, but still be with family, and/or allows my daughter to do crafts galore. I knew I was yearning for a new kitchen, but I never thought it could make this kind of difference....See MoreWhen is best time to buy real Christmas tree?
Comments (14)We purchase our tree about 2.5 weeks before the holiday. I ask and wait for when a fresh delivery is going to occur. Then I choose from the ones that haven't been opened yet--I am an expert at knowing what the shape and thickness of tree will be prior to opening! The only thing that trips me up in that department is when there are some broken branches, because those only show up after the opening. I always bring my own scissors to cut the strings and hand wipes to remove the sap from my hands after purchasing the tree. We hose off the tree before bringing it into the house, followed by an overnight dry, and make sure there is a fresh cut done at home, and that the cut end is always in water. I do experience the serious tree allergies grainlady wrote about with noble firs. And the more the tree would dry out, the worse the symptoms became. I suffered a lot for many years, with itching eyes, and coughing starting from a few days after bringing in the tree, and it would get progressively getting worse until my esophagus and lungs burned with pain. But there was no way I was going to give up a live tree (long story behind that, that I won't go into here). However, the local HD lots started selling Nordmann firs and those made all the difference! Not only do I like their look slightly better, but my allergies don't kick in until well after the holiday now. I remove the tree before the discomfort begins. I would not have thought there would be much of a reaction difference between one fir species and another, but there was....See MoreThose of You That Have A Little Time To Pass What Do You Like To Do
Comments (24)I'm busy from 3 a.m. until 9 p.m. Even though I'm retired, my whole day is filled with what I laughingly call "make work programs" which contribute to our healthy food sources (sprouting, growing wheatgrass, micro-greens, fermenting, a WindowFarm and an AeroGarden - for off-season indoor gardening), and I spend time researching food and food science on-line and working on lesson plans for classes I teach at different venues (Food Bank, Extension Office, Senior Center, 4-H Clubs, Women's Shelter). I make time each day to knit or crochet and for reading. I participate in two message boards on-line, and that's enough for me. I do bulk food preparation - cook once for many meals - so meals don't take much time to prepare, and our home food storage takes some time each day to make sure I track rotation, use, and inventory. I like to try three new recipes each week and like to try new foods and ingredients. The great outdoors takes a big chunk of time during garden season. At least an hour of exercise 5 mornings a week from 4-5 a.m. - in our basement and/or outdoors. I've finally cut back on my volunteering so I can spend more time at home doing things I enjoy. jemdandy - My last PC was a reconditioned business model and I got it inexpensively through hubby works. NO GAMES!!!! If I want to play solitaire I have to find a deck of cards now..... No more time-sucking "free cell" (LOL), but I did love it so........See MoreGigi Johnson
