When is best time to buy real Christmas tree?

I know it's a bit early to start the Christmas tree conversation, but since it's just around the corner, I thought I'd get a head start. In years past we've had a beautiful artificial tree we would put up the day after Thanksgiving. All the family was still in town and it was a nice tradition to have everyone participate in the decorating. This year, the artificial tree is no more, having succumb to some damage while stored in the shed. So, we are thinking about going with a real Christmas tree for this year and then purchasing a new artificial tree at the end of the season when they go on deep sale.

For those of you who use real trees, how early is too early to put one up? I've read some who say the trees are cut at the same time, so whether you purchase one several weeks or several days before Christmas, the quality will be the same so may as well buy early. Others say buying a tree too early will result in dead needles and a huge mess. So, what say the folks on here?
