When is the next best time to buy appliances on sale?

We are in the process of building and I need to purchase appliances. I want a Kitchenaid dishwasher but would like to pay a little less than the regular price.

Does anyone know when the next big sale on appliances? Prices did not go down on black friday enough for us. What about the day after Christmas or the New Year?

Kitchenaid is offering $100 rebate on selected stainless steel DW models through Monday...at least at Lowes. Not sure if it's all retailers. I know that's not a bunch.... I have also seen a few stories about a "cash for clunkers" type appliance program "coming soon" but no date given. Those deals will be in the $50 to $100 to several hundreds of dollars depending upon which appliance you replace.

Cash for clunkers is scheduled for April 2010. And it only includes some appliance types, DW, Refrig, W/D. No ovens/ranges. I assume appliance companies will lower prices to entice you to their brand (or dealers, to their store) when that happens. Too little, too late for me.

Might be too late for you, but Best Buy has a great deal - 20% off all major appliances if you buy 4 of them at the same time. Plus 2 years at 0% interest.

Louis, if you do not own the home you live in, I would recommend keeping them in large pots so you can easily move them with you. Just a thought. We are only trying to help you avoid wasting your hard earned money on a plant that could be disappointing, will die, or worse yet, infect your other roses. The Own-Root question: "Body bag" roses are generally roses that are grafted onto the root stock of a faster growing rose. This makes them grow faster in a shorter period of time. That's fine, unless the rose dies back and the root stock grows up instead. Then you are stuck with a very fast growing rootstock that will most likely disappoint you with climbing limbs and only one bloom in the spring. Own-root roses won't do that to you. That's just the tip of the iceberg--I am sure others can tell you their main reasons for own root preference. But some people don't really care much about own-root vs. grafted. I prefer own root, but it won't stop me from getting a grafted rose if the conditions are right. However, my 100-year-old house used to have a whole row of "Dr. Huey" (a common root stock) roses growing along the fence, and I guarantee you that at one time, every one of those Dr. Hueys was growing as something else. Trust me--we were all once newbies to roses. I used to buy the $5 plants in bags because it seemed economical at the time--but more often than not I was disappointed in the results and/or lost the rose. My husband always tells me that "We don't have the money to buy cheap s@!t." What he means is that when you buy junk, you have to keep spending money to replace the junk and eventually, you've spent a fortune on junk. But if you invest in a good, long-lasting product just once, you spend less money and have better results. I recommend that you invest a bit more money in fewer plants. That's just my two cents. Honestly, it sounds like you have a list of excuses to not listen to the advice. *shrugs* Think outside the box and consider other options rather than shooting them down. We're only trying to help.

Melissa, I think it depends on what specific varieties you want to grow. There are generalists such as Parks and Stokes and Johnny's and many others, but there are also some excellent tomato seed sources that concentrate on tomatoes and have a much wider selection of varieties. Just the following three places have maybe close to over 1000 varieties offered: Tomatogrowers.com Sandhillpreservation.com Victoryseeds.com Just speaking for myself I wouldn't buy seeds just b'c they're cheap. I'd also want to know that they're fresh seeds and that my seed source has a reputation for selling pure seed most of the time. And I'll note that when it comes to pure seed that no place has a perfect record just b'c of the way one saves seed from OP varieties. Most places, especially those places that save most of their own seeds, such as Sandhill and Victory, usually have their newest stock in late Fall and that's when they update their websites and catalogs to reflect the additions and deletions of varieties listed. I don't know when the best time is, but it seems Sears is always having appliance sales so maybe sales for them are frequent. To me, rebates mean a new model is coming out, so you might want to check on that. Though they usually don't want to say when new ones will be on the market, in my experience. Buying Scratch & Dent (there are outlets, or models at the store) can save significant amounts. A lot of times the damage is in an area that would be hidden by a cabinet or wall.

Thanks for the info. I checked some other sites too and it looks like the best time is the fall. Thats when most dealers try to rotate the old inventory out and bring in the new. Some suggested November as the best month. Most said to never buy a hot tub in January. Big purchases should never be made during tax refund season. We are starting to plan out the layout for the backyard now. It won't be finished until the fall so it's perfect timing. Thanks again.

Sears will be having a friends and family (20%?? on Kenmore)percent off starting Dec. 6. I have a flyer around here somewhere that gives the details. Check with a salesperson at Sears, they will tell you the best combination of ways to cut the price down. Taking out a Sears card also gives you a percent off. I also read on the net that the best time to buy appliances is Sept./Oct. when the new models will be coming out and the old ones go on sale. Black Friday didn't help me either.

Check out the cash-for-appliances rebates. Each state has their own rules, so you'll want to check what they're doing in your state. Florida, for example, is offering up to 40% off (!) but they don't want to run out of money like the cash for clunkers deal, so you'll have to register in advance to get qualified for the rebate and then buy the appliance during the rebate period.

I am in NC and it's the last weekend of this month. We get 15% off the price (not tax or shipping, only the item), but here the retailer just takes it off at the point of purchase and they have to file for the rebate.

We will probably buy a new fridge and perhaps a small chest freezer.

I think SC is the entire month of April, but I'm not sure. I work in SC, but it goes by where you live.

Gsciencechick--do you know if this is for replacement purchases only or new building buys? I heard that you had to have an old appliance for trade-in. We just moved to NC and building right now.

Texas already did it's registration for rebates (what a mess!) but even those who did not get a rebate reservation can take advantage of the Energy Star appliance sales. Sears will have all energy star appliances on sale for 30% off next week -- at least here and in FL, and I suspect other retailers will be competitive to make sure they get a piece of the action. You can get most any appliance on a 10-15% sale pretty regularly at Sears. The other big box stores run regular sales too, If you don't have a dead fridge (the one thing I couldn't wait for) and can wait, you just need to watch for the one you want

Traceyb, you are supposed to be replacing old appliances, so new builds are not eligible supposedly, but since there is no "check" that you actually got rid of the old appliance, I don't know how they could tell if it was new build or not, unless you have to sign some affadavit.

Our fridge is from 1995 so not energy efficient, but I was hoping to donate it to a local charity who will accept an appliance that old (Habitat for Humanity will not).

When I talked to the retailer we are interested in working with, she said details were still coming in.

In Texas, you DO have to prove that you recycled or disposed of your old appliance. It's on the rebate form.

I need a DW and Refrigerator. Glad to be rid of the old, but not sure where to recycle! (You get an extra $75 if you recycle.) Anyone know?

response to gina: Sears is the only place I've seen that recycles. The only place that has the model Samsung I want is Lowe's and so far nothing from them about recycling. If anyone gets word about recycling for the TX rebate program, please post.

Lowes and Home Depot recycle, too! No charge! Sears charges $65 for delivery and $10 for recycle/removal.
