No, replacing the floor tile.

Everything you see in the kitchen will be replaced/changed, except for the appliances remaining stainless steel... Replacing range to a newer model, removing microwave and replacing it with a recirculating hood (style tbd). Definitely replacing light fixtures :)

Since there are no windows in there ( probably some adjacent ? ), I would pick a lighter shade of gray . But that’s probably because I’m not a fan of two tone kitchens, and certainly not a dark gray in a windowless room.

Agree with the above. No windows + dark cabs = a dark kitchen, of which I am not a fan.

Unless you are going to lighten the floor considerably, it will be dark. Look at the 3rd pic that I posted above. I would suggest a lighter gray.

I would choose a lighter gray for the cabinets. I think it would be different if the kitchen were open, but it's really a fairly closed space, so dark cabinets and floors would keep the space dark. Would you consider a light tile in the kitchen? If so, then dark lowers would look okay.

The kitchen is actually part of a big open space which include living/dining area... I don't have a very good photo of it, but this gives an idea... Please disregard furniture, wall paint, light fixtures, curtains, etc as it's all being completely changed...

I would still go with a lighter floor in order to do the dark lower cabinets. But that's just me. :-) Hopefully others will chime in with some opinions.

Agree on the lighter floors... I'm looking for some specific color recommendations for the grey bottom cabinets :)

What a shame to change out all the essential elements and finishes
of a space that is actually pretty harmonious--wood and tile floors and cabinets harmonize with living area and seem to be made with beautiful materials that will now be painted, ripped out, etc. You could accomplish a lot with a gorgeous modern rug, interesting great art, curtains. Your choice. Good luck with it.

A deep gray will not coordinate well with your floors. In my area, gray is trending out. Stained wood is trending in here. YMMV.

Anna Novo, I feel ya. I had a dark stained-wood kitchen for the 19 years I have been here, and I was totally over it. If I could paint every last piece of knotty pine in this house, white, with a magic wand, I would do it in a heartbeat. But at least my kitchen and dining room now make me much happier. So I get the "time for a change" thing. And as far as the "gray trending out" - LOL. Colors should be what makes you happy - not what someone else thinks is, or is not, a "trend". BUT - the floor color in the rest of the area should be a consideration. Rethink your dark gray choice - or at least use an online visualizer tool to get a better idea of color.

I just recently remodeled our kitchen, going from cherry and golds to white/grey. My one suggestion to you would be to get the vibrant grey you desire in your new floor tiles and go all white on the cabinets. Otherwise I feel like it will be too much back and forth on the dark and light from one floor to the other then up the walls. Then in a few years if you tire of the grey, you can switch it out to something else without having to repaint/replace cabinets. Your cabinets look to be in decent shape - are you going to repaint them or buy new ones? Here is our project, still in progress... Even though your cherry floor won't be directly next to the cabinets, I found when we painted out DR wall that the blue/green greys worked best with the cherry tone, everything else just looked "dead".

NO prison gray. You’ll hate it when it does not work with anything else in the home. Pick a real color. Or just leave it alone. It’s ahead of the next trend. The Color of the Year was just Marsala, which is what you have. It’s fine as is. You don’t need to spend 50K at all.

Isabel and chess - thanks for your kind words. I understand where Anna novo is going from - we too picked what we liked at the time but my tastes have changed to more modern for sure. We had tried to stain maple to match cherry and it was an epic fail and just oh so much orange. For the update, we stained our Brazilian cherry floors and then painted cabinets (with a little re-working to remove arches and fluting) and added new counters..

Anna, I would do as housegal suggests and see if lightening up the paint, counters and backsplash would bring you the change you need. Cabinets can be refaced or painted in place if you decide to go that route...

I will post a full picture of the space as it is, but I don't want to hijack Anna's post. That said, I would love some input on my space as I keep working towards completion... I would like to thank everyone for their opinion but also to respectfully point out that my question was not whether I should update my kitchen but specifically about what shade of grey to use on the bottom cabinets to achieve the desired result. We are actually refacing, not replacing the entire cabinets. Although some cabinets will be replaced. I’m tired of yellows, reds and browns and while there is nothing I can do about my wood floors, I’ve seen plenty of photos suggesting that with the right shades of grey and white, it can work beautifully. I really hope someone can still point me in the right direction of choosing the greys for the cabinets and walls.

Unfortunately, I could give you color names of a dozen greys but that does not mean it will look right in YOUR house with your floors and lighting. I had a sherwin Williams color snap consult that helped me navigate all the undertones and hues to settle on a nice grey that worked with our lighting and floors. It's like $85 and you get a $50 paint card and a couple of coupons for BOGO sample quarts. The paint visualizer tools on most websites will allow you to take a picture of your space and then paint it up. I would still get samples before deciding but it will help you narrow down how dark you want to go.

Gray doesn't go with your wood floors. That's why you haven't gotten the suggestions you want. Sorry.

Choose a taupe color instead of gray. And I agree with the paint visualizer suggestion. Most of us don't think the gray works so I'm not sure you are going to get a good answer to your question as to "what gray".

Ok Sorry about getting off your question based on your photos I just can’t throw out paint colors but you can go get samples and paints some boards and look at them in your space. A color consultant might be the best way to go

I'd look at the kitchen as a whole..and try to determine my flooring first..what would work with my vision(don't choose your gray just yet), with the rest of the space, and won't look like an afterthought?

(I personally just continued floors into the kitchen because the space dictated it, and I couldn't think of any other solution that wouldn't chop the space and won't look like an afterthought. was easier though since floor was laid all in once

sharing this as somebody who has reddish walnut floooring, and light taupe/greige cabinets (that can be more gray or almost oatmeal depending on the light. that's what I love about them..how they constantly change)

I like the contrast between brown/red and warm grey or off white...

you need to know what level of contrast you're good with. I have several colors going on in my house and all work with the flooring, sometimes the consrast is higher, sometimes milder.

I think shade of gray(or any other color..my first choice for cabinets was much bolder a color))) would depend a lot on all the other elements..and floor is a very important one. Consider it first; it will lead you to decision about the color

Also agree that you won't know how a color will behave until you see it in your space in your light. All my door samples didn't work..they were too cold. They looked great when laid hotizontally. The moment I put them vertically as they'd be installed vertically too-they were too cold for what I wanted. I'm a warm color person, I pick warm version of any color for major surfaces, so wasn't good enough. In the end we went with a custom color. No Revere Pewter no Elephant Breath no Dovetail..nothing I had high hopes for worked in my house as I wanted it to work.

So. I'd figure out the whole big picture first. Check flooring options. Then narrow on color. Then..sample.

I'd go with lighter, warmer shade of color in your case. Your tile will need to correspond with your wood floors too. And have some contrast with your cabs. And..I don't know what you expect of tiles but mine shouldn't be slippery for example. That's not an easy fit. So I'd start with the most complicated part-the flooring that will go with everything that stays AND with whatever your vision is for the future.

Decide what hard finishes you will use...floor, counter,backsplash and then chose paint so you have something to reference. You don’t want to have to chose a counter based on a paint color
