Brrrr! It Is A Cold and Windy Morning
Comments (11)The cloud cover we had for much of the day has gone away during the last couple of hours and the rowdy winds that were in the teens and twenties almost all day have dropped to 4 to 6 mph now as sunset approaches...so I am expecting the worst tonight. I have three bowls of tomatoes, peppers, black-eyed peas and green beans sitting on the counter and I guess I'll do something with them tomorrow. I'll probaby mostly freeze them. With over 300 jars of food canned this summer and fall, I have officially 'ended' my canning season by putting away all my canning supplies and saying "I'm done" although Tim has been lobbying for me to make some autumn jellies. I could pick another 2 or 3 gallons of peppers but at this point I'm just not going to. I've long surpassed the 'too many peppers' point, and likely will grow only enough for fresh eating next year because there's enough in the freezers and root cellar (canned and jellied) to last at least two years. The Freeze Warning now covers about 2/3s of the state, including my county, so I'll be surprised if we don't freeze here along the Red River, given that cloud cover has gone away and the wind has dropped. I keep saying it is time and I know it is, but I'm going to miss the vibrant red blooms of the Texas Hummingbird Sage and the Pineapple Sage, the lovely golden-orange flowers of the black-eyed susan vines, the tiny white flowers of the sweet alyssum, the deep dark purples of the morning glories, and the stunning pinks and fuschias of the four o'clocks. Heck, I'll even miss the big white flowers on the daturas....oh, and the lovely lilacs and bright reds of the gomphrenas. Once everything is dry and brown, I sure do miss the colors. Oddly, we still have a lot of oak trees with foliage that is completely green (but not the post oaks--they turned brown early this year) and our red oaks are just now beginning to turn red. The Aristocrat Pear outside our bedroom window is still green too. Most of the trees on higher ground have lost their leaves though, and it is just the ones closest to the house that haven't. Can I start counting the days until spring now? Dawn...See MoreLosing the battle to finish by Christmas. But it looks great.
Comments (9)Lisa, Indoor camping is fun, grab some tree branches, stick them in a vase and decorate with mini candy canes. I remember moving into my house and having four mattresses side by side spanning the width of the family room and sleeping like that for over a week, with no tv or internet. Sounds bad but was actually fun. I know it's more difficult over the holidays, but at least you love your kitchen! I can't wait to see it! I had to google madre perola. Looks beautiful and I'm anxious to see it with your oak cabs. Post pics asap! Good luck with the move....See MoreChristmas Shopping anyone???
Comments (17)We don't do a lot of gift giving anymore since the families have grown so much. I do buy for my 2 sisters and my Mom. And my husband for his mom. For our grandchildren and family we send one big check for them to either split up or use for a family gift. They love that. And it sure is easy. I have one present for one sister so far. I do start to keep my eyes open around this time of the year for good options. I like to get a selection of gifts for my sisters to make one big gift sack each. Since mom is in the care home not a lot she can have there so we are pretty limited. I always get a beautiful floral arrangement for her room, she loves flowers. I shop online as much as possible it is just so much easier for me. Being out in the crowded stores in a wheelchair is not a lot of fun. I have had people actually fall sitting into my lap because they were not paying attention or on the phone. And I have a BIG RED wheelchair LOL....See Moredo you buy yourself a Christmas present?
Comments (62)No, I don't buy myself a Christmas present. Which is not to say I don't buy something for myself or the house when I come across a great price while shopping holiday specials. I MAY buy myself a gift this week, but not to wrap and put under the tree. DH and I haven't exchanged gifts on Christmas for a number of years, focusing mostly on children in our lives and my mother then a couple of charities. But I lost an earring in July. My everyday pair that I could wear without removing for weeks at a time, often only taking them out for more special occasions or on my way to have my hair cut and colored (where I don't wear jewelry). They weren't exceptionally valuable, but little white gold hoops with small horizontal baguettes. Now I don't have hoops, I have hoop. Long time jeweler here is retiring first of the year and I don't know the young man who has bought his business. The jeweler has been generous with his trade ins, I may go see if he has what I need on the chance that policy will be changing when the store changes hands....See MoreRusty
