I got a note someone had commented on this old post. Interesting to read the old 'news.' It is kind of interesting to read the comments people made regarding patience and being 'nice' to suppliers. I tend to give people one chance, then invoke the nuclear option. I learned way back you get what you accept and hold people accountable to their word. Probably a USMC thing. Ya'know, bring a gun to a knife fight, bring a bigger gun to a gun fight, bring a nuke in any other situation. You get what you accept. Looking at my situation it was my fault, assuming the supplier had integrity, and Lowes would act quickly to resolve a problem that should never had occurred. The Lowes rep said I had to pay up front, which is when I should have walked out. Live and learn. My wife says I do not like the work other people do, and in general she is right. In 30 years of living in my house, rebuilding from the studs out, there are a few things I have not personally completed: Install wall to wall carpets, install the counter tops, put in a new electric service panel, glass shower enclosure Counter top story is here, the carpet guys had to redo a shoddy seam, the electric guy, middle priced quote out of 4 was perfect. The shower guys took out their work because they did not like how they did the job, I didn't have to ask. My wife comments on 'her' plumber, painter, ceramic guy, sheet rocker, cabinet maker, window installer, roofer, electrician, finish carpenter, deck builder, masonary guy, hardwood installer and finisher. She is right when she says I do not like how most people work. When I got to people's homes to see work done, I am warned to not comment. But even now my wife says things like 'why did they accept that work?' Anyway, a couple of 4 year later comments on Curava counter top material. The counters are nice, durable with a couple of exceptions. Since the stuff is manufactured with ground up glass it does have some possibility of chipping along any edges and even in the field of the stuff. We have a couple of spots where small pieces of glass have chipped out. I repaired one or two by cleaning, filling the small ship with clear epoxy, then trimming with a razor blade. Worked fine. One other issue I would caution customers with. Every here and there we have pieces of blue glass mixed in with our brown and amber colored glass chips. If you do not look closely, you would not see them but I would recommend a very thorough, complete agreement before installation and a close inspection of the surface after install or of the tops before they are installed. Maybe that manufacturing problem has been fixed. I think they may have a few more color choices now so I guess its possible for more color schemes to get mixed at the factory.

I think perhaps by definition we TKO are disproportionately fussbudgety. What's it all for anyway? You can't take those perfectly unscratched cabinets with you. Maybe have yourself buried with them like pharaohs? Nah..... Dings Happen. And as for dh's who can't refrain from cutting on granite - well, that's why we just need to teach (or have taught) our children well.... :) And in the absence of that, this is why we have MIL jokes... ;) FWIW -- I drive around in a minivan that has a cracked bumper; you can see its innards, the metal "I-beam"-like thingymabob in there. It is very out of place in LA where so much is just-so. I attract a lot of attention. But it is not worth it to me to spend the money (thousands; more than the car's worth) to fix it. And in all honesty, I don't care, though I recognize it gives many the willies. Thing is, it reminds me of an interlude in French Canada where the ding was inflicted by a snowplow. They have a very different relationship with snowplows, snow removal and those who perform said operations there. The previous winter there had been several individuals killed by errant snowplows. But subsequent inquiries had determined the individuals were simply "in the wrong place at the wrong time" -- like my car and its bumper (parked, on the side of the road with many others just like it). Things happen, and just about all that changes is our reactions to it. Seems a life's lesson I rather value leaving visible on my bumper. But of course that's way too long a story to explain to the guys trolling parking lots looking to "fix" it (not) for a few $$.

@jeandeyoung I realize that this is an older thread but I recently had an issue with poor fabrication of our marble countertops in kitchen. I was shocked that they would place a seam over the dishwasher and continue with another one without 3 feet left of there. Furthermore, the seams were about 1/4" thick which were repaired with white epoxy and then the repairer cracked the edge and tried to hide it. Furthermore, both the radius at sink and cooktop were bad. I brought it to my GC's attention and he blew me off immediately. It took me three weeks to get up the nerve to finally say that the job was unacceptable for $10K; I was going to replace a portion, then finally had another fabricator after inspection take them out because the entire job could not be "pieced" nor "matched" color-wise. As it turns out my contractor's sub of 16 yrs actually subbed out the job to someone else because he was too busy. No contracts were ever signed and the fabricator only came out once to measure and was not here at install nor did he come back and inspect after I complained. My contractor left for five weeks because he was furious - mainly due to the fact that I busted "them" for poor work. I don't want perfect - I just want a decent and fair job in the first place. This has delayed our project for almost three months because now it's back to the drawing board to select a countertop surface. Not easy doing it at the end of a project vs. selecting first where everything revolves around that top! Fortunately, my plumbing has never been installed. I hope you eventually got your issue resolved amicably but what a stressful situation for all involved.

I'm so sorry this happened to your lovely granite! And thank you fabricators for piping in to let us know that this can be repaired. I really don't understand the liberties some guests take in a home. And I agree that it's frustrating to be labeled "b*tchy" when you're trying to protect something that means a lot to you that you spent a lot of money on. Just the other week I had some guests (male) over who were eating Doritos and then putting their hands (without washing or using a napkin) on some white chairs in my living room. Argh! I felt terrible asking, but I just couldn't stand the thought of orange fingerprints on chairs that I saved up to buy. We want to share our homes with guests, but I think it's fair to ask that they respect the space and be careful not to do damage. I hope the repair turns out perfectly!
