That is great news Laura! :) It sure is trying hard and I would name it the "Comeback Kid".. lol.. If it were my tree I would pick off any fruit (which I did with mine when it started shedding a lot of leaves) so the tree can concentrate on growing stronger overall..My BDF shed all of its leaves and shows no sign of new growth whatsoever. The branches are still green though. It has been down in my gh under strong lights for the past month and a half.. just sitting there. . I wish we knew why this poor plant struggled so much for us!

Ps: That is not a Nagami Kumquat but the fruit is more shaped like a Meiwa Kumquat. .

I hope yours comes back also Jinny! It is probably gathering its strength. That kumquat is weird. The leaves are more elongated like the other nagami trees I have, but the fruit are more round. It had a few fruit last year, but my daughter ate them all so I was unable to judge. At the time, I was sure it was nagami. The leaves of my fukushu are rounder, but I don’t have a meiwa, so I can’t judge. I would love it if it were a meiwa! It certainly has not grown all that quickly.

Yes Susanne, my fukushu has rounder, smaller leaves. I assumed meiwa had similar leaves to fukushu, but am glad to be mistaken. I’ve wanted a meiwa but have never taken the plunge to get one. It will be nice to compare. I can say that the nagami fruit that are growing on my trees are much more elongated than these.

However, I have nagami and meiwa and the leaves look pretty much the same to me. Same with all my seed grown plants, leaves look about the same. I also have a nagami with fruit, and while most are elongated, 1 or 2 are actually fairly round.

I am pretty certain based on you guys and those pics that what I have is a meiwa...yay!

The leaves on both my seed grown Fukushu and grafted Fukushu are larger than the leaves on any of my grafted or seed grown Meiwa kumquat. The fruit from my Meiwa is almost perfectly round. I have not gotten any Fukushu kumquats yet. Both the seed grown and grafted Fukushu trees grow 3 times faster than any of the seed grow and grafted Meiwa. If your tree is growing with gusto it is not likely a Meiwa. The meiwa kumquat fully ripe is the best citrus I have ever tasted.

Meiwa scions have a very small host of rootstocks they will grow on and not get sick and die a few years down the road.

No one will carry meiwa on the best "K x R", but 2 excellent choices of Poncirus trifoliata or flying dragon should be findable.

As long as there is growth below the graft the fruiting scion will not grow. It will die over time,.

Laura, I think you have Meiwa kumquat, looking at the leaves and fruit, very similar to my Meiwa (look at the top leaves, the suckers are Volkamer rootstock):

Steve, thanks for the above link. I think I am going to graft buds from my Meiwa on to Meiwa seedlings and sweet orange seedling rootstock, I want sweet Meiwa fruit , sour rootstock can affect the taste of the fruit. I think these rootstocks are ok for container citrus. We will see next spring.
