I agree! I've always preferred to taste my vegetables, rather than sauces/sweeteners etc. I always tell my DH that I don't want my vegetables "disguised".

Agreed! I think the super sweet, marshmallow topped ones are nasty.

Was never in favor of eating something as sweet as a dessert (actually sweeter!!) with my dinner. I prefer all my veg with a more savory approach. Roasted, baked, mashed, French fried or chipped but no sugar, marshmallows or pecans in my sweet potatoes! They are plenty sweet enough on their own.

I like them pretty much every way however I don't care for the marshmallows on top. I have long been a fan of the oven baked sweet potato. Split open with some butter and a little cinnamon sugar. My mom made them that way as long as I can remember.

I like sweet potatoes with just butter on them after they are baked and I like sweet potato casserole and I like the candied ones. Not so much the french fried ones, but will eat them. I do not eat yams.

They have the natural flavor of a tiny dash of nutmeg, I think. Does anyone else taste that flavor? We love them baked or grilled and eaten with a little butter.

Sweet potatoes are such a healthy food until we start throwing mini-marshmallows and brown sugar at them.

If y'all have not roasted them, you should! They are way better than baked IMHO. I do bake them though because it's quick. The other day, I peeled one and sliced it and put it in a small covered glass dish and microwaved it, then I mashed and put some butter on it. A little more work than just throwing them in the microwave, but in the end it's easier than trying to work around the peel.

I like sweet potatoes the same way I like white ones -- scrubbed, baked, with butter and salt.

I dislike that sweet casserole as much as I dislike that salty green bean one. Heck, I don't even like marshmallows by themselves! I do have a sweet potato casserole made with cider and spices that I like.

Love sweet potatoes! Wouldn't 'dream of putting sugar on them.

While they're good baked, they're even better cut into sticks and roasted with chipotle powder. They're also wicked good in a gratin with chipotles, adobo and cream. Another favorite is sweet potato andouille bisque. I don't fry, but will order sweet potato fries in a restaurant.

CindyMac, I made a sweet potato gratin with chipotle, adobo and cream for Thanksgiving one year. It was really good! I think it was a Bobby Flay recipe. I also make a savory sage version that is good too.

I had the best sweet potatoes at a steakhouse. They were mashed with butter, cream and a little bit of cinnamon. I'm not a huge fan of the candied potatoes but I made some for Thanksgiving and the pan was scraped clean.

Unrelated, but I didn't realize I liked butternut squash until I had it pureed with lots of butter and a touch of maple syrup. Delicious.

Never have them with any sweets on them. We often have them baked, or roasted with just a bit of butter, salt and pepper.

Chi, that's the one. I think Mique from the cooking forum posted the original recipe. It's become a holiday tradition in our house.

I don’t care for the marshmallow stuff either. I prefer baked or roasted with butter, cinnamon and maybe a little maple syrup or honey. My DD does put a little streussel topping with pecans on hers, and it was nearly gone on Thanksgiving.

Buy the ones with dark skin, they're tastier than the ones with light skin.

Try roasting for about 2 hours at 250 degrees. The inside gets very fluffy and creamy.

I bake them and eat them plain with a little butter. I also roast them with butternut squash, Brussels sprouts, onions, turnips, beets coated in olive oil at 400 degrees.

I like mine topped with mustard and salsa. I love them roasted and as french fries as well.

So many are saying they eat them with a "little bit of butter." Not I. A lot of butter and nothing else.

I only tried baking them once and they oozed all over the place, so there are 2 ways we eat them now.

One is to peel and cube them, along with regular white or Yukon Golds, with lots of whole garlic cloves and olive oil and bake in a casserole. Covered, then remove the foil for the last few minutes. Absolutely delicious.

Another way that we have often, because it's quick, is to peel and slice into thick rounds. Saute in butter, add some water, cover and steam and remove the cover and let caramelize.

My favorites are the very oranged fleshed ones usually sold as yams. Roasted and then mashed with goat cheese and chives. They are a Thanksgiving hit with my family but I eat them like that all winter.

Growing up, sweet potatoes were a Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner treat. Always, just baked in their skins, and eaten as a regular white potato would be, slit open and lots of butter & some salt added. That is still my favorite way to eat them, but they are a year round treat now. I had never even heard of the casserole with all the 'stuff' on it until I was grown. Really don't care for it at all. Sweet potato chips and fries are a fairly new experience for me, and I love them! !

My grandmother always slathered them with drippings from the dripping can (remember those ?) and baked them. I was young, so I can't remember what else went on them at the table, maybe butter and cinnamon? But I do remember how shocked I was the first time I saw her dip her hands into that grease jar! Since I am older than dirt, there was no such thing as throw away plastic gloves.

I have not noticed ones with the darker skin mentioned. I eat mine baked or microwaved. The one with salsa sounds good as I never add sugar or marshmallows.

We had sweet potatoes as a side dish at a BBQ restaurant and they were baked, split on top and served with honey cinnamon butter. That's what I do now, too.

That's what I remember too. But since moving to Louisiana where sweet potatoes are a big crop I've learned to enjoy them year round.

A restaurant I've been to a few times has several side dish options when you order a sandwich. The default is french fries, but another option is sweet potato fries, but rather than sprinkling the sweet potato fries with salt, they use cinnamon and sugar. They are gross. The one time I ordered them I ate two fries and sent them back and got normal fries. Ugh.

For this Thanksgiving I made a dish called Fiery Sweet Potatoes with sweet potatoes cubed, boiled and mashed, with coconut milk, red thai curry paste, and topped with caramelized carrots

I've never bought a sweet potato wrapped in plastic... It seems like such a waste to wrap produce in plastic when it's already in its own packaging provided by nature! lol

I buy plain sweet potatoes and nuke them, or roast them in the oven. I don't cook ANYTHING in plastic.

I don't wrap them when I put them in the oven to bake but I do put them in a foil lined pan because they will leak. Now I am hungry for a baked sweet potato. Living in Louisiana there were farmers selling their sweet potatoes by the box out on street corners. Omg so good fresh out of the ground and they are excellent quality. We grew a lot of them too. We had them probably more than regular potatoes. Mom would make sweet potato pancakes too. Yummy hot with melted butter.
